Turning off Indexing Service will help speed things up. In fact, there are a lot of unnecessary services that can be turned off that both increase performance and safety. I use this by "Black Viper" as a guide:

I like Start>Run>Msconfig

Let's you get rid of most of the pure crap that launches at startup.
