Golden Retriever without a doubt. We used to have one when I was a child. He was adorable and such a gentleman. He would step aside and let you through doors. I loved him to bits. We had him from when I was 7 and he died when I was 20. We were all so devastated when he passed away as we had lost a member of our family.

Mixed breeds, or "mutts" are the best dogs. Anyone who's had one will tell you this. They are healthier, smarter, and have less behavioral problems. The reason for this is that when the breeds are mixed, generally only the good traits come through. All breeds have some problem that they commonly have (hip displaysia, allergies, lack of patience with kids, etc.) These problems rarely show up in mutts.

Rottweilers. We have had them for many many years and they are really one of the best breeds. They do need the right owners however to teach them the right way and they are the most loving dogs just like Carl in the Carl books about Carl the rottweiler. Rottweilers tend to get a bad rap because of bad owners raising them to be mean and that is very very sad..
Rottweilers are not for everyone, but dalmations were the number one for dog bites and little tiny dogs as well. Everyone has their own preference but for us and many with the rottweiler clubs and pedigrees, rottweilers are a wonderful breed.
Thanks for asking!

The best dog breed is the one that you love the most and who fits your needs.
For me, that's the German shepherd. I love their intelligence and the fact that they are so people-oriented. They want to be with their owner and respond wonderfully to attention. Mine have always been easy to train and fun to be around, whether as a working dog or a household pet.
With the proper socialization and training, they can be the most loving, affectionate, and loyal pets that a person could ever want.

Your question is like asking what the best color for your living room is. It depends on any number of factors.
For protection and loyalty-German Shepard.
For family fun-Cocker Spaniel.
For cuddling and pampering- Pomeranians
For Rat killing-Rat terriers
To make a better world-get the dog from the pound.

I am not a dogie expert but I had plenty of dealings with Collie and Alsatian ( German Shepard ) I love them. These dogs are very smart, very obedient and learn fast.
I used to take my dogs to swim daily, the Alsatian was not interested to start with . I did not force him but it was like " O,well, no harm in trying the water" and he just jumped into the water playing with the other dog.
I must repeat, do not ever push or force a dog into the water.

Its a matter of personal preferance, For me though I would have to say one of the bull breeds, probably a Staffordshire bull terrier.
I also like Alsatians and German shepards.
In terms of Loyalaty Mongrels are hard to beat.

Depends, if you have children Jack Russells can be a bit tricky, a Labrador is a caring type of dog very good normally with wee ones, if you don't have children then anything goes.

Why the Brussels Griffon/Maltese mix of course. Nonshed, good natured, monkey face dogs.
A great breed.
