When IQ tests were invented, the test was constructed so that a score of 100 was "average." Today in the US it's still pretty close -- I've seen estimates of 98~101.
There are several different tests of IQ now, all of which claim to be able to reduce intelligence to a single number. There are many who find that idea a little silly. That said, there seems to be a correlation between IQ and the ability to do well in college and at work.
If you're interested in the subject, let me recommend a very good book called "The Mismeasure of Man" by Harvard paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould, available at all good bookstores and at Amazon, e-Bay, etc.
