Abu Ben Adam (may his tribe increase)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace
And saw, within the moonlight of his room
Making it rich, like a lily in bloom
An angel writing in a book of gold.
Exceeding peace had made Abu Ben Adam bold
And to the presence in his room he said
'What writest thou?'
The vision raised its head
And with a look of all sweet accord
Answered: 'The names of those who love the Lord
'And is mine one?' said Abu.
'Nay not so' Replied the Angel:
Abu spoke more low
But cheerily still and said 'I pray thee then
Write me as one that loves his fellow-men'
The angel wrote and vanished. The next night
It came again with awaking light
And showed the names of whom love of God had blessed.
And lo! Ben Adam's name led all the rest.

A wonderful poem from my childhood that stays with me to this day (now 65). In Catholic teaching - if you love thy neighbour you automatically love God. I am not religious in any sense of the world, but poor old Abu was doing exactly that. Love your fellow men, including those who hurt you......... Its hard but worth while in the long run........... it gives you peace.

God is secondary? lol

I think the poem rather wants people to loves others because of God this lie is temporary as our the bodies we live in, loving others is in itself a worship of God.

but one who believes in and loves the Lord above all others has his/her name written in the Book of Life (the gateway to eternal life with God).

no, god is not secondary, because showing love for your fellow man is showing love for all, even god

no-leigh hunts point was that ,even if one fails to live up to the highest standard of god,god loves all those who extend love to their fellowmen, and who are of good heart and pure intent.(james henry leigh-hunt,author.friend of byron, keats, coleridge, wordsworth and shelley)
