Icy cold, murky water and not very pleasant to swim in, even after a mile hike down some old railroad tracks in the summer heat. This was in southeast Missouri, and I was always afraid that there might be water moccasins and other snakes.

Give me a nice big well-chlorinated swimming pool any day!

As a kid I used to go out to the old quarry to swim. It was fun because there was, and still is, an old steam shovel that is out about a hundred feet or so from the bank and you could swim out there and stand on top of the bucket. The water is over 100 feet deep because the steam shovel was at least that tall and the bucket is all the way up.

Yes, we called it the Pit. I can be fairly deep in the middle and a bit murky at the edges and often has a lot of weeds growing in the edges. But once you get in the deeper areas it is nice and cool. It was a nice place to fish too, caught a few catfish , some bass, and lots of crappie and blue gills. It was the only place I ever enjoyed catching whatever bit. Lots of great memories there. Got a fish hook through my nose that was messy but funny. I still laugh myself to sleep every now and then about it.

It was cold. And I was so nervous because people had kept telling me that there were things(bodies, cars, other stuff)in the water so I didn't stay there very long. They later drained it to look for a body but they never found it.

I thought it was really creepy. The water was blue-green and I never did 'see' a bottom.
