I've put him on diets but he always remains plump and is now 15 pounds. I love him very much and want him to be healthy, but if you've ever seen Shrek 2 and Puss in boot's eyes when he wants something, then that is the way he looks at me when he wants food. And he makes me feel as though I've been starving him by eating ravenously when I feed him, even though he gets 2 small meals a day. How can he lose weight easier?

If you will go to a higher quality food you can take weight off your cat. Most grocery store brands (and Science Diet) are 2/3 corn. Corn is used to fatten animals for slaughter and they live less than two years.

Read the label on the bag of food you are feeding him. Are two of the first three ingredients corn? Then this food will never help him take off weight no matter how much you might reduce the quantity you feed him.

In a small, owner-operated pet store you will find the foods that will help your cat lose weight and nourish him better. CA Natural, Natural Balance, Nature's Variety, etc. The first two ingredients you will read on their bags will be a meat protein source, the third will be a filler such as rice, oats, pea, or tapioca. These are not as fattening as corn.

Your cat will immediately stop GAINING weight on these foods so you're ahead there right away. The weight should come off gradually over six months and a year on this better, more nutritious food.

Your cat should be fed a set amount in the morning and again in the evening. With dry food especially you need to leave adequate time for it to be properly digested.

I am not a fan of totally dry food especially for male cats who are prone to have urinary problems. You will find excellent, high quality protein canned foods too in the smaller pet stores.

If you haven't already, try a special cat food that is designed for overweight cats. Then you shouldn't have to limit the intake quite so much and hopefully he won't act like he's starving. Consider getting another cat, if you don't have one, that he could play with. Also, invest in a lot of toys, catnip, a laser light, etc., and try to make sure he gets more exercise.

He's a CAT, and the joy of being a CAT is that you don't have to worry about human problems like image and being overweight. Some cats, like orange tabbies (think Morris the Cat) are meant to be bigger to begin with. I'd say feed your cat less of the dry cat food, which does not contain the meat and moisture that a cat's body naturally needs, and start feeding him sardines in water and wet cat food more than the dry stuff. Just like bread is not good for humans, dry food is really not good for cats. Cats do not like to drink water out of bowls, and most health problems in cats stem from lifelong mild dehydration. In the wild, cats eat meat and get their water and hydration from the kill's body. So feed your kitty in a more "Atkins" way (meat and moderate amounts of veggie scraps). Play with him with a feather wand or other favored toys. But the bottom line is, don't forget he's a CAT, and he, unlike humans, gets the humane option of being put down when and if he ever becomes unhealthy or in pain because of his alleged weight problem.

They make special diet food for cats, but I once had a cat who was 25 pounds and she was as healthy and active as a kitten. So the vet told me not to worry about it. Just cut back and the food. Also if the cat is fixed the tend to gain weight a little easier than most, but I think fat cats are the cuddliest and the cutest.

Well No matter how he looks at you with his begging eyes, keep him stuck to his diet..tho it might not work all the time one of my friends I work with his cat has to be on a diet and when the cat is outside to do his business it goes downtown and dumpster dives as Subway and other resturaunts so you gotta watch close so he don't cheat on the diet too by nabbing a mouse as a huge meal on the side and then look at you like he aint ate for days..

I hope he remains healthy for you cuz pets too can seem like a family member.

DO NOT GIVE HIM DRY FOOD instead of wet!!!! I tried this and almost killed my cat as he developed a serverly erroded bladder. It is NOT natural for cats to eat biscuits, they are carnivores!!!!! I got my cat from a rescue ctr and he was 7.6kg!!! V fat for a cat. I've got him down to 6kg so far with a strict 2 pouches of special vet low calorie food, no other treats, and an ostrich feather he likes to chase for excersise. He is 12yrs old and v lazy.

U have to be strict

Like people, cats will eat out of boredom. Try to get him interested in something other than food. Try some catnip, and some cool toys. Get him to play and excersise, and also talk to your vet.
