Next year I am going on a 20 day trip around europe. We are going to France, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria. What should I study up on so I won't look like a tourist and so I will understand everything. Also what should I bring.

learn french, Italian, German, what should you bring, what time of year are you going. Bring clothes for the weather. If you wear shorts in winter you will be obvious. If you bring an electronic appliance, (curling iron, blow dryer) ask for an adapter, or it will blow up, different electrical system. Don't flash money around, will mark you as a tourist for sure and get your money stolen

depends on what time of the year you will be going? what's wrong being identified as tourist? you are there for an adventure!

first of all do you need a visa to enter those countries? if you are an EU citizen, you don't need a visa but you will need to bring your passport with you. If you need a visa, you can get a schengen visa to enter those countries. you can get a schengen visa from the embassy of the first country that you are going to enter.

you need money although it is not safe to be carrying money when your travelling. just bring enough to pay for something that does not accept credit card. hotels/trains and some taxis do accept credit cards.

bring medicines - basic ones like for headache, diarrhea and colds. if you have allergy, bring some antihistamines like citirizine.

cloths - summer clothes when you're travelling in the summer and obviously winter clothes if you are travelling in the winter.

basic stuff such as toothbrush, tooth paste, shave + shaving cream (if you are shaving), deodorant/antiperspirant.

socks, underwears etc.

try to educate your self on the places you want to visit. you can search in the internet about all those places.

have fun and enjoy!

I would read about the places I was going to visit. Here's the website for Lonely Planet Europe. It will tell you about the different cities and countries you're going to see, so you won't be arriving clueless...and you will enjoy it more.
http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/europe
Here's another site that I love for traveling...http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/TravelGuide-Europe.html
This is my favorite travel guide to Europe
http://www.fodors.com/shop/buy/?isbn=1-4000-1275-9
Buy it on http://www.amazon.com/ or http://www.half.ebay.com/ and save money.
Bring a rain jacket which can double as a coat if it gets cold.
Bring layers, so you can take them off and add them as the temperature dictates. Bring something for headaches, cramps, diarrhea, and whatever medicines you need. Bring a camera, an extra battery for it, and a charger. You will need an adapter to recharge it...you can get it and information about which ones to get from http://www.magellans.com/store/article/358?Args=. Call their toll free number if you need more help. They're wonderful!
Bring a few large and small ziplock bags...great for dirty laundry souvenirs. . Make photocopies of your passport and put one in each piece of luggage in case your purse gets stolen. I always wear a fanny pack; in case you're distracted, your purse won't get snatched, and you won't leave it somewhere.
Have a great time!

Being a tourist isn't so bad... If you were going to the middle east, then yes, but europeans understand and welcome tourists dollars.(Even when the euro is worth more)

Just be yourself, and don't wear anything identifying you as an American--if you are--because that'll bes like a bullseye on your body. If anyone asks, say you're Canadian.
