My son-in-law asked permission to start seriously dating my daughter before he started 'officially' dating her even though they had been best friends for a long time. He expected and planned their dating relationship to ultimately lead to marriage. He formally asked permission to marry her about two months before he asked and gave her a ring.

for whats it's worth I have a tremendous amount of respect for my son-in-law and they have a terrific marriage.

When should you ask the fathers permission? Well, I would say before you ask the daughter. If the daughter is close with her father she will definitely find it cute and appropriate that you asked her father first. Good Luck :)

when the dad is in a really good mood so u have a better chance of him allowing u to marry his daughter and when u think he likes u enough. Just try to form a bond with him and use your instincts b/c most of the time they're right.

I don't believe anyone needs anyone else's permission to marry however, my new son in law, called both me and her father and asked us if we thought his plan for proposing was a good one.

I was thrilled.

before you ask her for starters, I'd ask before you even buy a ring. Be honest and up front with her dad.
