The "belief" thing is a result of the problems of the English language, not a technicality in how ideas are perceived. The common argument is that the belief in God is based on faith. (The idea of belief based on faith seems to be accepted by theists, based on everything the religious people tell me.) The idea of evolution is based mostly on evidence. Here is an example of of an evolution-related experiment. If you don't know what my point is, I'll reveal that after the experiment's explanation: A group of drosophilia (type of flies) was isolated and observed. These animals have short lives and give birth often, so after a few years, changes were noted. The newest generations were bigger and lived longer than the original bugs. Conclusion: the animals adapted to their environment over many generations. This is microevolution. Microevolution has been tested repeatedly and has been observed in the wild. (Example: moths in England before and after industrial revolution.) Macroevolution, on the other hand, requires a species to change. We have not witnessed that for 2 reasons:
1. Macroevolution requires hundreds if not thousands of years to occur. Darwin was only alive 2 centuries ago.
2. Macroevolution is most likely to occur when the environment changes. Humans have done things to the world that prevent certain parts of it from changing.

Now for the part about using one's senses. The idea of this argument is that, as I said before, there is data to back up evolution. (Evolution isn't 100% true. Like all theories, including germ theory, gravity, atomic theory, etc., it can be changed.) The data is obtained through observations, what we see. If we hear a change in an species' roar over time, that's hearing, etc. God is based on faith. The only data supporting the existance of God is the Bible. We don't know if the Bible is accurate, so what is there that indicates the existance of God?

Here's just some more info that doesn't answer the question, but is important in understanding why evolutionists like myself are so stubborn about the issue. It's a story, but it shows the importance of thinking of things scientifically: In the 1920's, a scientist found that one of his petri dishes was contaminated with a bacteria other than the one that was already there. He SAW that one species of bacteria died whenever it grew near the other. He could have said, "God smote the bacteria," and ended all thought there. However, he observed what had happened and was able to find the problem: one species was secreting an antibiotic. That antibiotic was penecillin, one of the greatest drugs ever discovered. Another problem that would occur with your logic is going to be when we find a drug to get rid of HIV. The virus' genetic code changes rapidly, so some get resistance genes. When the non-resistant ones die, only the resistant ones remain. This results in the virus evolving into a new, harder to fight pathogen.
Religious explanation: God wants the virus to survive.
Result: Person dies.
Scientific explanation: The virus' genetic code changed. Maybe we can come up with a new drug that will be effective against this new species.
Result: Scientists find better drug to fight disease. Person may still die, but others will be saved.

Your belief in God is due to only two things:
1) The Bible
2) The fact that many people believe the Bible is the word of God

Utlimately, your belief is due entirely to one book. The only means the book provides for you to personally verify its truth is to pray. Presumably you have prayed on on some occasions you had a strong feeling that you concluded was God answering your prayer. Other people also claim to have these feelings, but in all cases the feelings are subjective. There is no way to objectively determine the true cause of the feelings, or to even determine if the feelings where similar.

So, your entire belief is based on a book and a subjective feeling.

Evolution is also written down in books. In fact, there is much more written about evolution than there is in the Bible. Much of what is written about evolution is detailed descriptions of observations and experiments that have been done. All of these observations and experiments have been repeated multiple times by other scientists independently. No subjective feelings where involved.

The great thing about evolution, like all other successful theories i science, is that our understanding of evolution has allowed us to make predictions that have been useful. For example, each year new flu vaccines are created based upon predictions of which strains of influenza are going to be most prevalent in the coming winter.

1- Not all atheists believe in evolution

2- It's true that you can't touch, feel, hear or smell God or evolution * the acts of evolution to clarify, you can however touch the results...Go ahead and smack yourself upside the head. See? You're a product of evolution!*.

3- You have one book as your proof of God. Evolution has millions of years and science behind it. You can't look out your window and see evolution happening, but you can look to the past to see that it has happened. We both think we have a point.

4- It doesn't matter what I, or anyone else says about your belief in God. Nothing is going to sway you, just like nothing will sway me from my belief in evolution. You'll think you have the ultimate proof and I think I have it. It's a draw. Let it go and take care of your own spiritual house. Don't worry about what others believe.

EDIT: Learn about evolution before you talk about it . Man DID NOT come from MONKEYS...but from Ape-like creatures..and yes there is a difference. Fellow down below my answer is right, we didn't evolve directly from apes but from ape-like creatures. Forgot that I was replying to someone who doesn't know a lick about evolution. Most people who've studied paleoanthropology know what I was referring to when I said 'from apes' in my original statement.

Why do you people ALWAYS assume that anybody that believes in evolution is an ATHEIST? And for your information, I can indeed "touch" evolution - its in the fossil record, and an understanding of how DNA works. I'm guessing that absolutely none of you fundamentalists are actually scientists. Evolution says NOTHING about the existence or non-existence of God - it only says that we MAY have come from a common ancestor. Of course, we've been saying that for years... where have you been?

IF you made through the primary grades and high school you may want to take some college level classes in basic anthropology and archeology which will explain that humans and apes evolved LIKE each other and not FROM each other.
You will also learn about a process called carbon dating, which explains the age of many fossils and artifacts. You will also learn what the scientific process entails, from hypothesis, to theory and finally to fact.
Until you have some basic knowledge of science you have no business trying to debate your argument in a science community, you will find plenty of people to agree with you in other forums, but I'd stay away from here. Your mind has not yet evolved to the point of debating with grown ups, your best forum is the fantasy and fairy tale land of religion. Peace.

Yes, you can see evolution. Evolution is a process, not an object. And you see that process in action. We've seen speciation in various plants and animals. And we've seen evidence that this process has been going on a long time and that it is the reason we are what we are today.

Now, your god is supposedly a thing, not a process. Yet, we have no evidence of its existence. We have only old books that people wrote a long time ago.

Whoa....no one says that Christians or any theist cannot believe in Evolution, and no one says that every Atheist believes in Evolution...your logic is off base if you are trying to make some point here...are you implying that if one believes in God, that he cannot also believe in Evolution???? I certainly hope not. You have no point. sorry.

Humans evolved from the apes. I can hear my friends talk, I can see, hear, feel, and (unfortunately) smell them. So yes - We can do all that to evolution.

There is evidence of evolution, very strong evidence. There is logic behind it. God is only an abstract concept; evolution has been observed.

I choose to not practice any religion and Im not against any neither. However I will say why dont you have enough faith in your own religion to stop questions others or the lack of? This is yahoo answers not a bible thumping session. Educate your self before opening your mouth to judge others based on their views.
