I am interested in finding out more abou Christianity, specifically Catholicism but I am no theologian and want a text that is readable and understandable to someone with no background in the area. Any suggestions?

Catholicism for dummies is an excellent book!

It is very easy to read and understand like all the Dummies books are.

The Bible for dummies is also excellent!

So is the bible!

Well, the Bible is a good place to start! Start in the New Testament which will tell you about Jesus. Other books depend on the kind of person you are - 'Mere Christianity' by CS Lewis is excellent and a down to earth explanation of why he became a Christan and what Christianity is about.

For a more exciting testimony read 'Run, Baby, Run' by Nicky Cruz - a really exciting biography of the leader of one of New York's toughest street gangs who found Jesus and became a Christian. That's really excellent and a great starting point for someone who doesn't know much about Jesus. You could also have a rummage through a Christian bookshop, and ask the leaders at your local church. Just remember - even if you don't know Jesus, He knows and loves you. Being a Christian is amazing - good luck!

Read the Bible--but start with the book of John. Read NIV as it is much more easier to understand and not completely rewritten as newer translations are these days.

I would not advise you to become Catholic, as they have extra rules and laws outside of the Bible and worship the pope and Mary, which is against the teachings of Christ. [You should have no other gods before Him.]

Catholism is a religion, not a faith. Christianity is faith. I urge you to speak to someone in a non-denominational church (ones that have "Bible" or "community" in them are generally safe). Ask them for reference. You can also go to a Christian book store and ask them for a book that explains. I wish you good tidings.

I would recommend the Bible, begining with the Gospel of John and the New Testament.

But why specifically do you want to restrict yourself to Catholicism? I suggest you do not restrict yourself until you have some further insight. Let God be your guide.

not being funny, but actually try the bible! reading the book of Mark will give you an insight into the life of Jesus and his teachings, and thus the core of Christianity.

Other than that....CS Lewis has some brilliant stuff - even 'the lion, the witch and the wardrobe' is based on Christian teaching.
you could also try anything by Philip Yancey.

You should read Bertrand Russell's WHY I AM NOT A CHRISTIAN -- in addition to books by people who are Christian.

If you are interested in Catholicism, look through the Vatican's web site. If you want to read something scholarly -- read Aquinas.

Don't read the bible, not yet.

Head to your local big bookshop and head to the Religious section. Look at hte generalised books they have there.

You want something factual, unbiased, mutual. Which tels you about the belief of Christianity.

The bible, when you move on to reading, will show where these beliefs come from, and give you knowledge of what they follow.

I urge you to look into a non-denominational church that is based on the bible only. There are so many man-made things in religion. Religion is different than Christianity. Religion is made by man. The rules, rituals and dress codes. All man made!

1) Get a Bible
2) Get a concordance
3) There are many commentary books out there

Go to a Christian bookstore, and ask for help. There are many books out there that can help you. But never overlook the main book, The Bible. :)
