I'm trying to purchase new carport for a 1,440 square foot area of my home. How is carpet sold in the stores and how much would I need? I was told it is generally sold in square yards, is this true?
Anyone familiar with carpet instillation please help me!!!

You must be recarpeting a large area of the home or maybe even the whole house.

Minimally you will have 160 sq. yards of carpet. When that is broken down by room size the yardage could go up based on whether or not you are using a 12 foot wide or a 15 foot wide carpet. Is there any pattern to the carpet? That too can effect yardage.

You will probably want a new pad.

You will probably want the installers to pull up the old carpet and pad and haul it away.

There might be a charge for moving furnishings, if there is a piano, extensive TV hookups or a waterbed, expect to pay extra.

Based on 1440 sq. ft. I would expect a bid of about $5500. More or less depending on carpet.

Make sure you know the installer quality of work. Make sure they powerstretch your carpet. You just don't want it laid and kicked into place. Powerstretching will ensure carpet does not wrinkle in time. If the carpet you select has a sofbac backing that too will help the making sure no wrinkles come with time.

When selecting a carpet, know that nylon will wear the best. Make sure you have a stain resistant fiber, such as stainmaster, or equivelent. You will want a wear rating of at least 3.75 on a scale of 0-5.

You will want at least a 6lb density pad, but if it is in your budget upgrade the pad. Pads should be no more than 5/8" or 9/16" high, you can go with a pad as thin as 3/8". Density is most important factor here. The denser the pad the better you carpet will hold up. The denser the pad usually the harder a carpet will walk. Get your softness from the carpet.

Get more than one bid. Make sure they powerstretch. Talk with a knowledgable sales person. If you are repainting, paint before new carpet goes down.

yes, generally sold in square yards. 1440 square feet is an enormous area in most homes, so i'm assuming that's for more than one room. there are 9 sqare feet to a square yard so you'll need at least 160 square yards. you'll need to measure each room and calculate separately to be most accurate. most salespeople in carpet stores can help you figure out what you need.

wow that's a huge carport! the 160 square yards still applies and the salespeople will still be able to help you.

yes it is sold & installed by the yard, measure the the rooms square footage use 1 foot wide by the length then just multiply the width, a 10 foot by 12 foot room is 120 square feet or 13.3 yards.

they ususally sell it by the square yard, which is 3' x 3' sections. But sometimes they do it by square feet.
P.S. keep the carpet cleen...ChemDry is the BEST out there. They use machines that are more expensive and pick up dirt that those other companies leave behind.

Most stores sell it by the square yard. Make sure you have it installed by a professional. They will stretch it and make sure it is installed properly. If you try to install it yourself, you'll regret it in the long run.
