It's kinda like the whole Britain owning Gibraltar thing. I guess you could say that Gitmo is our piece of the rock.

We do not have diplomatic relations with Cuba. However, in 1898, during the Spanish-American War, Americans set up camp in that part of Cuba; it is today a naval base. America leased the land on both sides of Guantanamo Bay starting in 1898. Cuba believes the lease is invalid under international law, but they have not really done anything about it. In protest, however, Cuba (under Castro) has stopped cashing the rent checks that the U.S. sends every year. For more detail, check out wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guantanamo_Bay_Naval_Base

Be there in a naval base is illegal as it is to torture and jail people without due process...It was unethical to take over an almost won conflict and impose an amendment to the new constitution. Exactly 30 years after the beginning of the Independence War in La Demajagua, October 10Th 1898, the city of Manzanillo was bombarded. The only reason for American presence there is for provocation...

The US has a long term lease for Guantanamo! Cuba would love to see the US depart, but ain't going to happen. So, for now, like it or not, Castro's stuck with it.

Guantanamo bay is a US military base that was leased from Cuba
many years before Castro and the US decided to keep the base after Castro came to power...Of course Castro tried to make us leave but he could not...

{quietly smiling at all the gung-ho american answers :-) }
It's leased - a legal agreemant similar to the lease Britain had with China (over Hong Kong)
As in that case, the lease will eventually end and lets hope that USA gets out with decency and decorum, the same way that Britain handed over Hong Kong.
{or would you yanks really like to kick up an international incident over a few acres of scrubby land which is only fit for a prison camp?}
