At the day care where I work, there is one 4-year-old girl who is terrified of going into the bathroom. She pitches a screaming, sobbing fit for no reason I can see.
It takes about 5 minutes for the other kids to use the restroom, and 15 minutes to coax her into going. What can I do? Is this a normal fear??

The parents do know. They didn't seem to care.

I am a special education teacher, and I have worked in pre-school age classrooms over the past twenty-five years. I don't want to scare you, but a lot of young children will act like this when they have been molested. I have actually been teaching children of this age group, and we have had to have medical tests done on the child, to rule out any physical problems that could be causing this fear. Some children that are victims of molestation are molested in bathrooms, and are frightened of it happening. Please, please ask a supervisory person to get a psychologist and/or nurse or doctor involved in this. My heart just jumped into my throat as I read this. Some children are scared of new experiences, but if this is as repetitive as it sounds, there is something else going on. Please get help for this child. Thank you for being an observant child care provider.

you should tell her that you are going to go into the bathroom with her and help her through it. Tell her it is normal and that every person has to go on the "potty." Don't forget to mention that you do it too. Maybe also talk to the parents and see what may help her. Maybe if you give her a reward like a few extra minutes of play time or a snack, she will be more willing.

Kids can be scared of a lot of things. I used to be afraid of the tub when I was little because I thought I'd go down the drain with the water.

Maybe her parents are doing things to her in the bathroom at her house and she fears that you will do the same thing. Maybe they molest her or something terrible like that. I'm serious.

Maybe something horrible has happened to her in the bathroom. I also knew a little boy that was afraid when the toilet flushed.

should ask and notify the parent about this phobia of ..the restroom..i think she is scared of the toilet because she might have seen or see a glimpse of a movie that has a scarry view of the toilet or the whole restroom..
