Kamikaze kid is right. . .adding oil to the boiling water does nothing useful. To keep pasta from sticking
1) Use a lot of water. Pasta sticks because starch comes off the pasta when it cooks, and goes into the water. If there isn't enough water, the starch doesn't get diluted enough, and pasta cooked in this "starch broth" water will be sticky.
2) Once you have cooked the pasta, you may want to toss it with a litte oil or pasta water (or sauce) to keep it from sticking to itself as it cools.
3) Be aware that pasta naturally has a sticky, starchy surface, and this helps the sauce stick to the pasta. Which is why some people say you should never rinse the pasta, since you are rinsing off the starch. So that means that choosing to add a little pasta water rather than oil or sauce will be choosing the blandest option, while discouraging the sauce from sticking to the pasta a few minutes later.

The reason pasta sticks together is starch in the pasta. You must make the starch level of pasta the same as the starch level of the boiling water. The best way to do this is when you add your pasta stir it continuously. The starch for the pasta will bleed into the boiling water making it equal. Then your pasta will not stick together. Oil helps a little.

Oil and water do not mix
Contrary to popular belief adding oil just goes down the drain after cooking the pasta
You should stir the pasta the first couple of minutes of cooking and then save a 1/4 cup of the water after draining and toss the pasta with this water
Better yet add the pasta to the sauce after draining so that the pasta absorbs the flavors of the sauce

While boiling, put in a bit of vegetable oil or butter which keeps the pasta separated and won't boil over.
