Jacob fathered 12 sons. They are the ancestors of the tribes of Israel, and the ones for whom the tribes are named. Each occupied a separate territory (except the tribe of Levi, which was set apart to serve in the Holy Temple).

Jacob had twelve sons from four different wives. His first wife, Leah, had six sons. Their names are Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. Jacob’s second wife, Rachel, had two sons. Their names are Joseph and Benjamin. Jacob’s third wife, Bilhah, had two sons. Their names are Dan and Naphtali. Jacob’s fourth wife had two sons. Their names are Gad and Asher. (Genesis 35: 23-26) These sons make up the tribes of Israel. Joseph received a double blessing from his father and was promised that both of his sons, Ephraim and Manasseh would each be an individual tribe of Israel. (Genesis 48:5)
The original apostles that Jesus ordained were Peter, James (the son of Zebedee), John, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus, Simon, and Judas Iscariot. (Mark 3:14-19) And yes, the twelve apostles are responsible for judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (Luke 22:30) After Judas Iscariot betrayed Christ and committed suicide he was replaced by Matthias. (Acts 1:26)
