Let me explain. When you have the urge to go the bathroom (for a "number two") it has to be acted on more or less immediately. If you suppress the urge (for instance because there is no convenient convenience or you're stuck in a work situation) then the chances are that you can't recreate the urge through force of will. You have missed the "poo boat", and have to wait for it to come round again of its own accord. It is similar to having a good idea or clever thought - if you don't write it down straight away, the chances are it will disappear and, as often as not, no amount of strenuous thought can summon it back. I hope this makes sense.

The movement of your intestines is called peristalsis. It's an involuntary contraction that goes in a wave from the beginning of the intestine to the end. They usually occur every 10 to 20 minutes. So if you don't go when you feel the urge, you have to wait for the next contraction.

I can't believe I'm answering this. Geez.

If you miss a boat, you have to wait for another one to come to the dock, right? If you try to board on your own schedule, you'll probably just get wet?

Same principle.
