Deserts are expanding because the rain forests are being chopped down and not replenished. That doesn't mean the temps will be any hotter but there is more of a chance of extended drought in areas near deserts and when land near the deserts are left naked, the soil blows away and helps the land become desert and useless for agriculture.

Are you thinking of global warming? The earth can be hotter on average and the climate of a place may or may not change.
