I have friends and co workers who went to great expense and worked hard to immigrate legally. To me illegal is the key word here. I have a problem with this because it is a blatant disregard for our laws. People are being and encouraged to commit criminal acts, which many condone. It is ironic that our airports and ports of call are seen as important places to intercept terrorists. Yet, it is acceptable for people to come over the barely being detected. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that the Mexican and Canadian borders as well as the Bering Sea offer very easy ways for undesirables such as terrorists to filter in to out country. I was talking to a Mexican American woman who has serious health care issues who wanted to go to a public clinic to get medical care but left after an hour and a half of being in line because she was waiting in line behind people from other countries. She said she knew this by listening to their conversations. She told me she has been living here and working here all her life and everywhere she goes for services for people with small income, she now has to wait in line for hours. This is where the rubber is meeting the road and Americans are falling through the cracks while foreign nationals are getting services at the expense and peril of Americans.
Common Sense...I REALLY like your post.

Of course I hate it because it is wrong. I know many LEGAL immigrants and they hate it also. They did it legally. They went through the exhaustive system, hired the attorneys, went to the INS interviews and waited the YEARS it takes to be approved legally and documented. How do you think they feel with they see individuals that just up and come here...no papers...no interviews...no nothing! Or who lie and say they need a temp visa to visit Disney land KNOWING full well that once they get here they are NOT going to leave! In the community that I live in there are entire supermarkets where NO ONE speaks any English. Not the owner, supervisor or janitor. I have gotten utility bills sent to me in Spanish only--not even an English version...just Spanish. I go to the ER and it's full to the top with people who speak no English and have no green cards. A nurse there told me that their ER 10 yrs ago had an average wait time of about 30 minutes even on a Saturday night. Now due to the huge Hispanic population the average wait time is 3 hours and the hospital no longer hires anyone that doesn't speak SPANISH. It's a shame. Evidently it is relatively easy for people to come here illegally so they just bypass the system, the red tape and the wait times. This means that they can come here rapidly and by the millions and just saturate the country and its culture with no regard for our laws, language and so on. It's awful and it bites!

I have no problem with immigration as long as they do it legally. My ancestors came over on boats and were documented. They paid taxes and earned their right as Americans. I don't fancy the Idea that a family can run the border, live in America off tax payer's money without ever paying into the pot. How could they, we don't know they are here and the employers don't have to claim them. I think America needs to stop being nice. We should not allow them the luxury's that they come here to take advantage of (free school, health care, etc.). Like I said all they have to do is be documented, I'm a fricken citizen and they got paperwork on me. Why do these illegals get to come in and live under the radar and avoid the obligations all American citizens have?

Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration. Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely. Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.
Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave. But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors; I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).
According to the protesters, not only must you let me stay, you must add me to your family's insurance plan, educate my kids, and provide other benefits to me and to my family (my husband will do your yard work because he, too, is hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part). If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my right to be there.
It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm a hard-working and honest, person, except for, well, you know.
And what a deal it is for me!! I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of selfishness, prejudice and being an
anti-housebreaker. Oh yeah, I want you to learn my language so you can communicate with me.
Why can't people see how ridiculous this is? Only in America!

These are desperate people who cannot find jobs in their country. As much as I feel sorry for them, we cannot absorb millions of people into our society. We have far to go in upgrading our educational system, health care, environment, affordable housing.
Legal immigrants were always welcomed to the US when they were sponsored by relatives, and religous groups that made provisions for them as to housing and employment.
If an illegal immigrant becomes ill, suffers an accident, or becomes the victim of a crime, the taxpayers of the middle class USA has to pay for it. The money they earn when they get here goes back to the country they came from to support their families.
Their own governments should be developing programs for their own people.

Same way I feel about other criminals, such a speeders, drug abusers, thieves and pickpockets. I have met many good, hard working illegal immigrants, but our nation has laws for a reason. However, I can't blame them, as the US presents fantastic opportunities, and it is our own fault for not beefing up security. Frankly, it ought to scare the US that it is so easy for people to just walk past our border security! Think about what kind of terrorism risks this poses to us!

I don't feel any bitter feeling towards them...if I lived in complete poverty and could simply cross a river, or jump a short wall to live a wonderful life, I'd do it too.
How do I feel about our government completely dropping the ball on immigration and letting them all in...not so great!

Well I am against it for one simple reason. There are too many jobless Americans. So, why should they get to have our jobs?
Otherwise, I wouldn't care at all. At some point all of our ancestors were immigrants to the USA. We stole it from the native indians. Unfortunately, thats how the world works.
