my three cats never let me do ANYTHING without getting in the way. Like if I clean house they have to attact the broom, get in the way, jump on the counter when I wash dishes...etc. When I do something on the computer they have to jump right on the keyboard. I always had dogs and they would come and lay by my feet or lay their head on my lap but cats seem to have to be right in the action and I just wondered why is that. I thought cats were supposed to be independent.

Cats are definitely more independent than dogs, but that doesn't mean they don't like interaction. In fact, most house cats crave it, and seek it out wherever possible.

To them, you sweeping the floor is a game. After all, that doofy looking device sweeps back and forth across the floor....they don't know that it's "cleaning", they just see you moving it and want to be a part of the action. Same thing when you're washing the dishes.

Both of our cats bug my husband and I while we're on the computers. If we're sitting at the desktop, our male will jump up on the desk and walk right in front of the monitor....and just stand there like, "See? I'm here. So pay attention to me!" Lol. If I'm on the laptop, it's not unheard of for them to jump into my lap and walk all over it while wanting me to pet them. They don't know what the computers are, they just know they want your attention....and they're going to try and get it....even if it means stepping on the weird glowing thing that you're tapping on, lol.

If you want a pet that won't pester you, try getting a hamster or something.....but cats are more fun, right?:)

If you want to stop them from jumping on the counters, try some double-sided tape, a "scat mat" (found in real life and online pet stores), or those plastic under-rug liners....they have nubs on the bottom. If you put them underside up on the counters, your cat's probably won't like the feel of 'em.

Another thing you could try.....if you don't want them jumping up there while you're washing dishes....splash 'em with a little water. Not the water in the sink since there's soap in it....just turn the tap on and splash some clean water on 'em. If you're consistant, odds are they'll quit jumping up there during dish washing time.

I have always had a cat. They are very affectionate but yet they are independant. They like to be petted and they see you as the bigger cat. Cats train you to what they like and don't like. I never see my cat as bugging me. Pets don't live as long as we do. They are very curious and want to know what you are doing. To keep a cat off of the counter just train the cat. Yell "NO and DOWN" as you snap your finger. If that doesn't work then just get a little water in your hand and throw it at the cat as you yell no and down. I did that to my cat. Now all I have to do is yell no and down. She jumps right off or out of whatever she is into that I don't want her into. They are very trainable. I don't allow my cat to get on the keyboard either. I tell her to get down and she does. You have to let them know what you don't approve of. They learn quickly. I also praise her when she does what she is suppost to. When I come home she is there to greet me at the door and I tell her Hi. I tell her she is a good kitty. When she gets down or stops doing something she isn't suppost to do when I tell her to stop I tell her she is a good kitty. They do listen to you even when you think they aren't.

Cats are considered independent. But also they can feel neglected very easily. They will always try to be as near to you as they can be. Also, if you have three cats, they can become jelous if you are spending too much time with the other ones. Maybe they are just trying to get your attention.

Because they love you! Sometimes I get sick of my cats wanting to be the center of my universe. Just take about 10 minutes to play with them, get them all tired out, and continue on with what you're doing. Or you can yell at them if you really lose patience. Then they'll hide under the couch for a while.

I have two male neutered cats and they do that to me also - its their way of telling you that they LOVE your company, they ADORE whatever it is you do, they wouldn't part with you for a minute! Hee hee hee... BUT this is what I do now to ensure that I get to do what I need to do when I need to do without without Kaffe and Cato's "assistance." I see to it that I give them EACH at least 15 minutes a day playtime with me. They each have their favorite toy(s) and activities. Cato knows that its his playtime when I get his favorite toys out and sit down crossed legged on the carpet. Ooooh, how he comes... Kaffe looks on disdainfully, becuase his favorite activity is to go "walkies" .
When either of them "plays up" by demanding more time, or getting in my way, it is the "SIN BIN" - i.e., the bathroom for 5 minutes. Do this consistently and they will get the message. But of course, do not ignore a genuine cry of distress from your kitties!

They are much more independent than dogs. But they also like affection and action. They are always curious and sleeps alot. So when you are home it brings them more excitement than their usually day to day. I have 3 cats and they can bug me too. But they look up to us as well.

yea I always enjoy having my cats supervising me, though with trying to sweep and them attacking it does get annoying. I love to have my cats sitting next to me when washing dishes it's fun, they will stick their paw in the faucet water and spalsh me and I'll sprinkle water on them, it's a little game we play.

You can train them not to get in the way or pester you. They are pretty smart animals. Keep the attention at a balance.
