Sanatan Dharma or Vedic Culture is based on teaching of God and Since God has no beginning, Sanatan Dharma has no beginning..
Some People believe that Vedic Culture started 3500 BC when Bhagavad Gita and other vedas where compiled by Vyasadeva.
But Vyasadeva just out of mercy wrote down the instructions in Book form, seeing this degraded age of Kaliyug. Vedic Culture was practiced from much before..
So let me give you a feel of what Vedas say about its origin...
Around 5000 years ago, ie around 3500 BC, this Dark age or Kaliyuga Started. This age is said to last for total of 432,000 years.
Before this was the Dwapar Yuga, the time when Lord Krishna was on this planet. Dwapar Yuga was for 864,000 years.
Before that was Treta Yuga, The Time of Lord Rama. Treta yuga was 1296,000 years (432,000 * 3) and before that was Satya Yuga which lasts 432000*4 earthly years.
In satya Yuga all over the world People used to practice Sanatan Dharma or Vedic Culture.
This is 4 yuga is a cycle and before this was another cycle..(There is no question of any evolution)
In One Day of Brahma, the first Created being on this universe,
There are 1000 such Cycles.. ie (432,000 * 10 *1000 earth Years).
Brahma lives in such days for 100 years.
Brahma has said in Brahma Samhita that in the beginning Krishna Taught this Sanatan Dharma to him ....And made him the in-charge to spread it in all the planets of this universe...
Brahma himself confessed that Krishna not only teaches Sanatan Dharma to him in this universe, but in all the Brahmas in millions of Universes that are created......
Infact as Kali yuga came, the Brahmana or the priestly class got very degraded as we still see now. Their only business became to cheat people in name of God..
Jesus, Mohammad where actually fighting against these Degraded Priests of Sanatan Dharma... to put back the real teaching of God...
We see in India itself all the Muslims where earlier followers of Sanatan Dharma...Some historians say that Vedic Culture came from East... This is not the truth but their claim is based on the similarity of East culture and vedic culture at that time ...
And if we are able to simply present Vedic culture in proper way, then every one will take it Back.. we have seen this with the spread of Hare Krishna movement...

As many of the answerer have said, there was no religion NAMED Hinduism. Actually what ever there was and still is people call it the religion or Dharma. Hinduism was named by outsiders by outsiders. So it seems probable that at least in the area near India there was no other established religion earlier. By religion people meant Hinduism only.
Who is the founder? Well there are some mythical stories about that. But as far as I know and understand this religion it is a continuous evolution of knowledge. Its like a spiritual science. It encompasses all the four ways to achieve ultimate peace.
Rajayoga, Karmayoga, Bhaktiyoga and Gyanayoga.
It does not left behind even any of the modern religious concepts (Christianity or Islam).
Asking about its founder is like asking who first learnt to make fire? Or who made the first wheels. It is so natural.
God has formed it. Well, every one say that there religion is gods creation. But why only religions. Every thing should be gods creation. Geta says that - You should do your own work, in there god lives. So, each of us may follow different paths, but at the end we will unit with the almighty.

They are no founders of Hinduism,no prophets.Although there have been saints or sages or wise men, who are found in all religions.
Hinduism is a constantly evolving religion, a perpetual reformation has been going on ever since it began.Hindus discard old and outdated traditions and go along with time.
There are no written rules, its a way of life.but there are traditions, thousands of years old,but you can break them, since they are not rules.
Its not wriiten anywhere not to eat a cow, but we still follow it,because its a tradition.because of us being an agrarian society.you won't stop being an hindu if you do eat.its food.
No convertions,no need to discalim your religion to become a hindu. As long as you are on the right path, you don't need to convert.whats the right path?there are many roads leading to the destination.Muslims, christians, jews, sikhs, buddhists are all on a path. Not the radical ones mind you.are they all hindus?worth debating.
moksha, nirvana are words for attaining enlightenment. Can one attain nirvana now? everybody does.Enlightenment is anotherword for common-sense.living a good life is enlightenment.
will add more if i can.there is so much more.
but if you want it in one line, hinduism is a philoshophy.
Its a way of life.
The above answer says about written rules? where are the rules written? if there are, does the comman man know about them by heart?are they like the ten commandments?
we abolished sati, we banned dowry(some people still take it,sadly),we banned caste system(some still follow and judge people accordingly, unfortunately), we are evolving constantly.
We are tolerant of all faiths, infact adopt some traditions from other religions too.we are so accepting that sometimes we are taken to be weaker.Although we have had some brave warriors.

Hinduism has been around since pre-historic times way longer than 3000 years ago, the western philosophers dates were simply attached to Hinduism to fit their knowledge of history. Therefore it is quite obvious that no one but the Hindus themselves have the accurate dates of the 'start' of Hinduism, which is very difficult to do because of the fact that it is not a profit's religion but God's.
wow wow wow...below has good points but also a very bad interpretation of Hinduism. You are a ver primitive follower of Hinduism and it is very obvious from your writings, you do not get information on Hinduism from the internet you get it from living a Hindu lifestyle, the writings, the rules, the way that the philosophies change the times not the other way, don't be so wrong about your religion and say that you can break this and that...because you not behaving like a Hindu.

The founder of Hinduism is man. It is a collective understanding of the universe by the people lived in the ancient India. It is the duty of everybody to try to understand the meaning of ones life and pass on the knowledge to others and create a universal religion. The Hinduism is flexible and you are free to interpret it in your own way of understanding

Yes ! Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world ! Unlike any other religion Hinduism is a religion not dictated by a single person ;but contibution of thousands of 'Rishis' and their books...its the collaborated work of dedicated 'Rishivaryas'....like Vedavyasa who composed Mahabharatha during B.C.5000...Of course no other religion can claim such a ancinent tradition !!! You and me can be proud of being a Hindustani ! Remeber India is the only lucky country to have hosted such a sacred tradiations ans scientific 'Aachaaraas' developed almost 7000 years from now ! The concept of God in Hinduism is just shortcuts develoed by wise Rishis to make the dissipation of a Supreme power spread over the entire Universe possible among ordinary people who can never feel the presence of a supernatural elecromagnetic force prevailing around them which of course has resulted in the formation of universe and the Geatest creations namely 'Homiosapiens' who can 'think' ,in this universe....The fact is that there is no real God like 'Vishnu' or Shiva or Brahmav or Srarswathi...All are symbolisations of certain types of electromagnetic powers....its highly scientific ...beyond the scope of lay man...Westerners have now created instruments like 'elecro encephalograph' 4 mesuring the electromagnetc energy radiating capacity of the idols of these Gods...sure no other rekigion is as scientific as Hinduism....Read Bhagavad Geetha and Bhagavatha 4 more clear details....Sreemad Bhagavad Geetha -->its a comple living science and crisis manager;believe me !

Here is a 'very' serious answer by a counter question. Where did the word 'Hindu" come from? It is not in the Vedas, like the mystic words: Om, Rama, Krishna also not in Vedas. What was the 'name' given to to the religion followed by the audience of Vedas by the writers of the Vedas? Not Hinduism. Donot my Hindu brothers claim Vedas to be their basic source of Inspired Words ? Well ! Every Religion claims it was founded by the Almighty(Parmatma,Parmishwar in your case) and the so called 'founders' were just the Messengers, Prophets, Saints, Gurus, Buddhas and in one case by the son of a God not by God Himself !
Your question is a genuine one. It opens many vistas for discussion and subsidiary questions. Thank you, dear Hindu brother. One history proves that the name or title 'Hindu' was given to the local population by the migrants from North. So the word:Hindu appears in the Persian Dictionary, not in Vedas.

I am not a scholar on the subject but according to my knowledge of shastras and vedas, Hinduism is the way of life, one should live and practise than the religion. It was formed or you can say founder was Manu. To refer this please read laws of Manu. Yes at present Hinduism the religion, is the oldest on earth but according to historians the Hindu civilisation and Egypt civilisation, which one is the oldest no one can say for sure. Islam and christian-ism is only few thousand years old. Buddhism and Jainism is derived from Hinduism. The Last question Manu is considered the son of Brahma
the creator and he was taught by his father Brahma and he in turns was narrated by Vishnu so one can fairly say it was formed by God himself. Once again I am not scholar if I am mistaken please correct me to increase my knowledge.
