You might be able to find a one day "crash course" if you call around.

Some good books to read:
The Birth Partner by Simkin
The Birth Book by Sears
Husband Coached Childbirth by Bradley

i just gave birth 2 months ago and that was my first. i havent been into birthing classes other than my book , pregnancy and parenting. i have the book since day 1. though the book had helped me a lot, the actual birthing really really is different that everything can be learned there. in fact, before the actual delivery when im already 8cm, my doctor asked me to practice breathing and it helped. With God's mercy, I delivered my baby boy in just about 15 minutes after 3 hours of hard labor. not bad for a first time. to think, birthing is one of my greatest fear ever...

Birth classes help prepare you for labor, and help teach you breathing and relaxation techniques. It's something that was created by man. Your body is designed to have babies. Through either years of evolution, or creationism which ever you believe, we have become baby making machines. LOL

If you've read up on it, then I'm sure you know what to expect. Besides, the nurses there will show you how to breathe so you don't hyperventilate. So I would say no, they're not necessary. Good luck!! =)

I just had a kid in the last year, she will be one in October... i took the birthing classes, and the nursing classes... and every other types of classes you can possibly think of, all i have to say is it all comes naturally. you don't need the classes, specially if you read all the parenting, baby-mag, child, or any other parenting and child book. yeah, it was a good refresher, and to do it with the hospital you use is kind of nice, and it was good information, I'm not saying it wasn't. but Ive heard about it in books over and over and other people over and over.
if you haven't had any experience with babies in the past, it might be good. our hospital had two parents volunteer their babies to demonstrate that were only a few weeks old.
my husband didn't like it, but i drug him any way. he seen a couple people he know and that made it okay. i went with my other two best friends that were pregnant too and that was fun, i wouldn't have liked it if i didn't know anyone.
so if you don't feel like it don't go. if you have any questions after the precious little baby is born then remember your doctor will always be there,

I don't think that the birth classes helped me at all. Everything I wanted or needed to know I either read in books or the nurses answered any questions I had.

I didnt' find my class helpful at all. I had already read about everything, so it was really redundant, and a waste of my money. The good part of the class is that they gave me a tour of the delivery rooms, and post-partum rooms too. That was nice to see before hand. But you can also just call the hospital and they'll give you a tour as well.

If you feel comfortable with what you know right now, I don't think you need one. The advantage of birthing classes is sometimes you'll meet other parents-to-be and get some free stuffs from sponsors, but that's about it.
They'd show you some video, but I've heard the videos can be checked out from the local library.

I have three kids it is not neccesary to have birthing classes just find a focal point and tell your husband not to annoy you and do the breathing don't worry contractions are worse than pushing them out and its better than the pain from a c-section trust me I have had three c-sections and one natural birth it's not too bad good luck on your bundle of joy!

I don't think anything can really prepare you for birth, but the breathing techniques are a little helpful but you can get those out of a book or online. Good luck and congrats.

I had three and never went to a class or did that breathing thing, it's instinct when you go inot labor. You'll know what to do, when the doc says push you push, thats all.
