too bad linux won't comeback once vista comes out this year

for windows, xp hasn't had too much competition which allowed microsoft to take their sweet time to develop vista.

It is only because you haven't had any experience with Linux (a clone of Unix) that you perceive XP being more advanced. Very simply, Windows is basically DOS with a graphical interface(mouse/icons). Oh ya, it can be networked and specialized versions can function as multi-user servers, but the comparison between Windows and Unix can stop there. Unix was developed in the late 60's -early 70's and has no equals in raw power and stability even today. Linux (still a clone of Unix but with Linus Torvalis's open source Kernel) has derived it's popularity by being open source, and there are several companies selling it for the same purpose as Microsoft, profit. Maybe 1 tenth of 1 percent of computer users have a real use for that kind of power other than for the purpose of Bill Gates envy or a need to bash someone else for their own lack of success. Not a one of these people would turn down the opportunity to make the money he did and I find that hypocritical and childish.
If you really have an interest, google Ken Thompson, UNIX origins, etc. Unix is still the king, 30 years running.

Thats both a question of perspective and support.

Microsoft invest heavily in supplier compliance, they pay manufacturers like Intel to write drivers for their hardware - Windows drivers. Linux is free, Linux drivers are written by people that don't work for the hardware company so they have to aim at the most popular products.

In what way is Windows more advanced than Linux? Quite simply it isn't. Download and install a popular distribution of Linux and if you give it a fair chance you won't put Windows back on your machine.

Play games on a console, use a computer to work.

Linux changes in the same slow pace as XP, it's just the branding companies keep pushing out "new" versions of their own brand, underneath it is not changed, the parts that do make a difference in upgrade do so in that slow pace, the interim "patches" (service packs in a way of thinking) are the "new" products from the brands and they are doing this as their own way of version control.

Checkout Debian; it is considered a good distro that has the same stablization pace on their own brand as XP has been. The second reason is probably you are comparing it from a point of view of ordinary home users, Linux has a lot catching up to do since Microsoft is only one of the few companies that has R&D and throws big money at UI products like "Bob".

XP unchanged?
the last SP of XP is 130MB, nearly a quarter of the original XP CD (520MB);
that's hardly unchanged;

what has not changed is the stupidity o the users (yes, YOU) who don't know how to use a PC properly and need (want?) Billy the Gate to tell them.

that kind of users will never be interested in Linux, even though there have been attempts (Gnome) to bring Linux closer to them.
