Also...I am in the process of losing a little bit of weight, but do not want to lose much from my glutes. Should I build muscle in that area to prevent my glutes from getting smaller, or will building those muslces make the size appear smaller somehow? I am under the impression that building muscles will make a certain muscle group larger, but I have heard so many different things. Sorry this is long...

Building muscle mass is best done by using high weights and low reps. The primary reason for this is you'll involve a greater number of muscle fibers and also target the white(fast twitch)muscle fibers.Fast twitch muscle is responsible for more mass and using heavy weights sends a message to your body to grow larger muscle. The best plan is to target only one muscle group in a session and train that group only once per week. You must also increase your protein intake concentrating on complete proteins.I'm running out of room for some reason and have more to tell you.Send me a message if you need more.

As far as reps - both are very important. I would modify every other training session. and good for you for being so dedicated!
Building muscle is a technique - and as far as your glutes - squats will build muscle but also tighten the area - initially it will make it smaller, but will level off at a certain point - though you can always take it to the next level of fitness, the appearance would remain the same (thought you may be able to lift more weight, run longer, etc.) - taking into consideration you do not gain weight (as in fat) at the same time...

So you wanna keep the nice butt, huh !!! Okay, here's my take on this thing.

First, I see many many women in the gym just killing themselves on the stair machines and the ellipticals, and I say to myself, why doesn't a woman want a shapely upper body also???

Second, the answer to your question is this: If you want to build muscle mass, then you gotta increase weight and fewer reps.

So here's my suggestion for YOU: Change your lifestyle and do this forever. Drink lots of water, walk an hour every day except 1. Do stretching, upper body toning, and lower body toning. Upper body should work the arms, back, abs, shoulder, & pecs. Lower body gets you onto the stairs and ellipticals working the legs & butt.

Eat fruits & vegetables.
No sugar
No sodas
No candy
No chips
No potatoes
No pasta
No pizza
no corn
no bread
no burgers
no fried foods

Good Luck

If you're going for muscle building, heavy weight with lower reps is the key. Also, throw in some cardio to accelerate fat loss.
