A cookie! Some special, big cookie, with frosting. Not like a cookie he would get any other day of the year, but a special cookie from a bakery. Make it a tradition, each year presenting him a special cookie.

Usually the teacher works on something with the children on their first day of kindergarten. My son started junior kindergarten last week and he came home with a painted 'kissing hand' for me and him. I bought a special scrap book in which i'm keeping all his special work from kindergarten...that might be a great thing to get him.

My Daughter started school this year too. In order to make this day special, she picked out her clothes that she wanted to wear, we made breakfast ( of her choice..pancakes) we ate breakfast together, the we took pictures. I took her to school and told her what a big girl she is and how proud I am of her. I went and had the picture we took printed out...when she got home on the fridge. was her picture of her and I had glued on some paper written with My very 1st day of school. She was so proud and happy. This was something for us both cause I can keep this always. Or even pass it to her when she is older. O and of course we sat and I learned all about her first day of school.

Going to his first day of school should be special enough. If you buy something for him for going to school you will be teaching him that he should get "things" every time he does anything. Why do you feel the need to buy him something. Take pictures save things he makes and make him a scrap book of all of his years of school then give it to him when he graduates college or gets married. It will bring back a lot more memories than a forgotten gift.

To say congrats on your first day of school, maybe take him out to dinner to his favorite restaurant, and let him get an extra special dessert, or maybe out for ice cream or something. Even the zoo would be a fun thing to do after school.

I used to teach Kindergarten and I remember that the kids love to compare their backpacks and lunch boxes. Let him pick out his clothes to wear that day, even if they are not the ones you would have picked. Entering Kindergarten is a milestone event, symbolizing his independence. He now has to make choices of his own. You can really help him gain confidence when you allow him to select the way the world sees him.

The best gift would be your time. Make it a special day for the two of you. Ask him what he would like to do.

You could take him out for breakfast before school starts that day. Another idea would be to take him out for ice cream on the way home from his first day of school. That is a fun way to find out how his day went.

Since I have two 5 year old grandsons who started kindergarten this year (with some reluctance)........and their parents are pediatricians, I want to share what they did. The schools told their mothers not to push any activity on them to participate (a few days ahead)......just to take it one day at a time. At the end of the day, one mom took him to get his favorite ice cream. The other said her child wanted to go to Chick Fillet and eat. Both chldren told their moms what they liked and what scared them. Encourage the child to verbalize his feelings.....good luck.....

Do you have the book "The Kissing Hand" by Audrey Penn yet? It's a great gift for a child starting school. It's about a little raccoon who is nervous about starting school. His mom gives him a "kissing hand" (kiss in his palm) to carry with him in case he needs it. This book started a tradition of "kissing hands" in our family and my children all get a kiss in their palm to take with them to school each day.
