Kibbles and Bits and Alpo are crappy choices. Go to a pet store and get a good brand of food like Nutro, Iams, Science Diet, Eukanuba. Those are all excellent brands that will give your new pup excellent nutrition.

Most chihuahuas prefer to be free range hunters. A chihuahua can take down a cat, possum, other fairly large dogs, and squirrels. If you get two or three chihuahuas together, they get back into the pack mentality that helps the wild chihuahua survive in the mountains of Mexico. A pack of chihuahuas can take down everything from a cow to a caribou.
Let your doggie roam the woods. The food will take care of itself.

i have chihuahuas myself, and if you are looking for the best possible food, i would go with royal canin mini puppy food. as they get older royal canin has a specific food especially for chihuahuas called royal canin chihuahua. It is a little bit pricey (about 30 dollars for a fifteen pound bag) but a 15 pound bag will last a dog that size a very long time. You can go to royalcanin.com to see a local store that sells it. Also, if you want something a little cheaper but high in quality I would go for science diet puppy -small bites. it is also very good, and most vet offices sell it. But really, ask the breeder that you are buying your pup from what kind of food they are feeding it. you could always stick with that! also, my chihuahua, likes a little braunshauager (liver paste) in his food. you can get it in the lunch meat section of your grocery store....its totally good for them and if you mix it in with their dry food when you get him home, he will be more likely to eat. Chihuahuas can be finicky eaters when they come home the first time and its important to make sure they have a healthy appetite right away! good luck with your puppy.

The same as would be best for any breed..a food that doesn't contain corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp, by products, dyes or chemicals.
Stay away from foods such as Kibbles N' Bits, Pedigree, Alpo,IAMS/Eukanuba, Science Diet..they all contain way to much cheap fillers, by products, etc.
Look for good quality foods such as Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Wellness, Canidae, Natural Balance, Solid Gold,Blue Buffalo just to name a few quality foods.

My parents had a Chihuahua when I was a kid. Cheeta lived to be 18 our years. Because she had sharp little teeth Mom was a firm believer in feeding her the burger packets for dogs. Cheeta liked the cheese burger flavor best.
