ive been given a frozen trout,(caught and frozen within 2 hours,been in freezer a week)but it still has scales and guts.if i thaw it out and remove scales and guts is it ok to eat?i wasnt sure as guts normally removed right away.please help! thank you

well it defrosted and ive just gutted it with no problems.no manky smell or anything.descaled it with a palete knife,and for the first time it didnt go everywhere!its in oven as we speak,and im going to check it in 10 mins.thanks for all yr help guys :)

I can't think of any reason why it would not be fine to eat. The problem with leaving the guts inside occurs when it is not frozen and left for a week.

It would be normal to freeze the fish after you have gutted it though. I think the reason for this is that it is easier to defrost in the microwave without causing any contamination of the smelly stuff in the guts like cavier!

People leave fish uncleaned when they freeze them to help preserve the fresh caught taste. A helpful hint is to use the side of a teaspoon to remove the scales. Hold it at an angle and scrape the sides as you go.

there will be no problem make sure you maintain the trout at 45 degrees or below before cooking it...i hope you the the person well enough to take there word that it was frozen right away........ive seen pheasants in england hanging with inards still in...so i dont think your little fishy is bad off.....

this would be ok to eat as long as you defrost the fish in the fridge overnight first

it's perfectly fine. just make sure to clean it out after it's thawed.
