It is the first time I go back to visit in 8 years and I am not sure what people would like as a small present from someone who lives in the US. It is hard to buy ( since most stuff were made in China anyway ) and giving money as present seems less meaningful...help!

I know exactly what you mean. I visit China and people expect gifts because you live in America and that it should be the right thing to do. The plane ticket to China doesn't cost as much as the gifts. Recently my grandparents from China visited for 10 months and here is what they took with them as gifts.

cosmetics (chapstick, lip gloss, blush, etc). Buy the big trunks with like 50 pieces, then just give them out individually.
Perfume--anything that smells good, doesn't have to be designer.
Fleece hats, gloves, scarfs. basic cotton stretch tee shirts.
Novelty items: X-mas salt and pepper shakers.
Any type of candy-Snickers (although chocolate can melt), hard candy, toffee, etc.

Buy them on clearance, after Christmas. Don't buy designer because most people don't know the difference. Try to find things that aren't made in China.

Seriously? Money is still the best gift. Take a stack of hundreds--they like them the best anyhow.

Other ideas: Marlboro Cigs, expensive cognac.

How do I know: my husband is Chinese :)

Other ideas: Good chocolates (quality ones like truffles), anything made with peanut butter (my mother-in-law went nuts over pretzels with peanut butter filling) Smoked Alaska salmon (easy to pack in suitcase), vitamins, some tubes of hand cream from Bath & Body Works (Fresia and Plumeria are good ones)

HAVE A GREAT TRIP!

Yes, everything is made in China anyways, but most people cannot afford a lot of little luxuries. On my last visit, I brought several little gifts mostly for my gf and her female friends, such as Native- American or Inuit-made jewelry, earings, necklaces, chokers, etc. They loved it.

Uh, I'm thinking higher priced spices would be kool? That wouldn't be over doing it.

We had friends visit & they were amazed with the food. Why not take over things from the grocery store?

Believe it or not......maple syrup and Kraft Dinner. I don't think they ate them together.
