walk into a place unannounced and ask for a tour....or just show up and look around

Pay attention to how the people are cared for, make sure people have taken to the bathroom and are clean...watch how staff interacts with the residents of the facility.

Also do some investigation with the state review board...see if there are any investigations or fines the facility may have.

Word of mouth is another way of getting the low down on a senior living facility....ask someone you know, they might have had relatives in the facility you are researching.

Do your homework, ask about the services offered and the type of care and level of care offered.

Good luck!

Look for quality and friendly staff. Do back ground checks on the place, go for a visit ask some of the residents, ask to call their families. They can be expensive but you want to make sure that the person can afford it but still don't give into cheapness or uncleanliness. Make sure the have a medical staff on board, an transportation to the doctors, also check to see if they have activities. I would go for the apartment one because I know older people still like to have their independence unless they are able to care for them self. But be thurgho when checking into theses place make sure you dot all your I's and cross your T's.

there are allot of things to consider do they have enough staff, cost, quality of meals, sanitary conditions, environment, special needs, laundry services,do they have any activities, night staffing, criminal back ground checks for employees, competent nursing staff,if they offer you a tour don't just let them show you an empty room look at the whole facility, i would suggest a sunrise assisted living facility. they have great staffing, nurses, and unsurpassed sanitary conditions, they also feature a Alzheimer's unit or rem unit as they call it with excellent food, they can Handel special dietary needs as well
