a JPEG file is an association with a picture. A word doc is a data file. I suppose you could print your document then scan it and save it as a JPEG, problem is you wouldn't be able to alter it because it would be a picture. Another downside is the JPEG file would be huge compared to the data file

Yes, if you have photo-imaging software such as Photoshop.
Open your word document, then use your "Print Screen" button to take a snapshot of the screen. When you press the key you won't see anything happen, but when you go to your imaging software just open a new blank file. Then, from your drop-down edit menu, select "Paste." You should see the snapshot of your document appear.
Of course you can only take a snap-shot of the visible screen using "Print Screen," so you'll have to scan down the document and keep snapping more shots of it, then build a long image using this combo of "Print Screen" and "Paste" over in your image software.
When done, save this as a .jpeg file.

One easy way would be to print it, then scan it as a jpeg format file. You might be able to convert it in photo shop or similar software but I'm not sure. They may not be able to recognize the document format well enough to reproduce it in jpeg.
Adobe distiller is good at changing formats from various formats into view only formats.

Yes you can - with a scanner.
Scan the document. When it is finished and appears in your photo editing program, see if you can click File, click Save As a jpg, or, right-click on the picture and see if you can "export as" a jpg.
Be sure to take note where it is going to be saved.
Why do you want to save a document as a jpg?
