Depends on what you're downloading. If it is something you'd normally have to pay for, then yes, it's illegal.

Nope. Most software companies give you softwares as freewares and free licensed to use. Most best softwares are freely downloadable. Like, download.com, no.1 download site, where you will find thousands of softwares free of charge. Yes, some are limited, like 21 or 30 day trial. If you like, you may purchase that.

Illegal use of softwares is illegal. Lets say, someone crack the password of a non-free software and share it with more than one users.

1. Downloading freeware is legal, as long as it does not break any laws (i.e. ripping movies & burning & reselling them).

2. Many computer programmers write very good apps, & they put them out there to see what the response is. It the app is popular & requests for added features from users exist, the programmer may go commercial with the app, because of it's value & need.

3. Other programmers just do it for the love of it. They may request a little pay, or a postcard, as payment, or nothing. It's up to you. Dropping a 'thank you' postcard in the mail is a fantastic way of expressing gratititude for making your computer life easier/more fun.

4. Just do a search for freeware search engines.

Free is free.

If it is stated as being free then you can download as much as you like. There are some laws governing what you can do with it such as selling or modifying it.
