If dogs didn't understand how would they be trained by police for K-9 jobs, or military or all the seeing eye dogs and other health problems. I just read an article about dogs that knew people were going to have epileptic fits prior to them having them. Dogs can learn how to surf, skate, fly, really just about anything a human enjoys doing if you train them to. Now my dogs know when it's time for me to cook...they love helping me in the kitchen

Dogs understand in different ways - they learn to recognize and understand words, and they can also read body signals better than most people do, so I'm sure your puppy does understand.

I think they understand. I was out driving with my dog today and ran in to get a cup of coffee - when I got back to the car I said, what are you doing? get in the back - no hand signals or anything, and she looked at me and got in the back. we also play hide and seek and i can tell her to get my daughter and she will - she knows what's going on...and she's still pretty young too.

My dog understands everything I say to her. They learn by intonation of words, recognize the sounds of words. Its called learning by repetition process.
