If you're concerned with muscle wasting (catabolism) then a protein drink an hour or so before will help but always after and your body uses absolutely no energy to break it down.If you do decide to believe that then the protein that I recommend is hydrolized(partially predigested).Digestion is done by enzymes and requires no calories to be metabolized. And that blood and digestion thing is a myth as well.Look it up.Carbing up right before a work out is a big mistake.Your carbohydrate consumption should be from the day before so that you use glycogen as fuel and don't spike your blood glucose.A rise in blood glucose will cause the secretion of insulin thus mitigeting a growth hormone response.Growth hormone is desirable even if you're not trying to get big because it has many more functions then just that.If you're lifting weights the cardio should follow the weight training because at that point you will have depleted your glycogen stores and more effectively burn fat through gluconeogenisis. The best clinically proven protein on the market is Designer Whey from Next Proteins.47% better than regular whey which has the highest biological value in humans.Stay away from Soy because it's an incomplete protein lacking some of the 10essential amino acids.God I hope that helps because I don't type well and I'm not hitting spell check because it doesn't like some of the scientific terms and sometimes dots them out.

You are probably better off drinking something with carbs in it than protein. Its not a good idea at all to take something with proteins before a work out. Your body will waste energy trying to break it down. What you want is like Gatoraid or something with sugar so you can burn that instead.
Protein is probably better consumed after the exercise - just after so you can use that to repair broken muscle tissue. Sometimes I have a glass of skim milk or two after a work out.

Depends, if you are doing weight training yes. If doing cardio, something with carbs will give you more energy. If you do drink the shake, do it an hour before.

Any food you eat should be approx 2 hours before working out.
Because digestion and muscles working out both need blood to do their thing. If you eat and work out too close together they are competing for blood resources and neither one gets the best.
So your digestions is grumpy, and your muscles can't work as hard. Eat first, your digestion gets out of the way, you have what you need to "go hard" and you don't feel too full to pump it out.
Good luck!
