I don't know exactly how young your child is, but writing is always easier if you are given an interesting topic. A good exercise in creativity that I recently read about is to have them write their own imaginative excuses for being absent or not having homework completed. The more unbelievable the better....
Dear Teacher,
I was on my way to the bus stop when I heard a loud THUMP....I turned around and there it was....the nephew of Godzilla!! etc. etc.
If they have something funny to write about it is so much more fun and they forget that it is actually schoolwork. I did this with my own children and they are all great writers and enjoy the process.
Also, have your child copy short passages that are good examples of writing. Mine learned a lot this way..mostly they learned to enjoy the beauty of words. And, read, read, read, and read some more....to him and with him. Children of all ages even old ones like myself love to be read aloud to.
I taught history for 10 years by incorporating historical fiction into the syllabus. The students identified the time period with the characters they came to know and love/or hate(villains and all that). It gives them new eyes to see history through. In 10 years I never had a student say, "History is boring."
"Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire."

Very few children love writing, maybe even you did not, ask your parents, just remember that and you will never feel annoyed. I think your child is not very small as you talked about hurting his ego, then you should encourage him to watch certain cartoons where the characters love reading or go to school. Also dont forget to reward your child when he does write, not big gifts but small ones and never punish him for not writing. For children to learn fast, it is very important that they see their friends and parents do the same things, so you should write with him to make him realise that this is supposed to be done and is important. Never compare your child with any other, it will make things more difficult.

make him do creative writing with some drawing too. Something to make him interested in atleast one aspect.
You should ask him what he wants to be when he grows up and why. Most likely, it'll be something that requires some sort of training. Tell him that if he wants to be a fireman or a doctor or a lawyer, that he needs to have good grades and he needs to know a lot of stuff and be really smart so that he can become one.

But if writing is the only thing he hates, try to make him write stuff besides school assignments, tell him you want him to write down a story and draw some pictures for it. Give him ideas. Make him interested to do some sort of writing.

Yes it is an important problem to be solved. You have to make sure that the child is not having any problem in studying or understanding.
Explain the problem to their class teacher. They may help. Some times They may face problem because of their physical problem like short sight. earring difficulty etc.
If you feel that the child is OK consult a good physio specialist

Pseudointellectuality and over expectation. Please donot force our coming generation to become a caged animal.
Just observe his behaviour and in which area he is interested. Children likes to play. Try to do his necessary learning through playing. Textbook learning is tiresome to almost all the children.
Any children's ego developes from his observation from his parents and seniors. Ego in a child is not harmful, it will help him in building himself as an individual.

In practical, try to create his interest in drawing. Each child is very much interested in drawing. Take some of your valuable time, and try to explain everything through sketches. This will help him to develope writing and slowly in his studies.
More are the things to discuss...............

he will just have to learn to like it.I hated it too, and it was because the teacher was wayyy too picky to let me write the way I wanted to. he was abusive to those that were not "perfect" and he left emotional scars on a few of us students. Make sure his teacher has parience with him,and make sure the teacher does not belittle, judge, exclude, be rude to, your child. Maybe your child is being mistreated in school? ask him,and look in onto the classroom... teachers hate that, because they can get away with so much.
