You can put the onion in the freezer for about 5-10 minutes before peeling. You can also buy frozen diced onions in the bag too :)

I had the same problem, I always used to cry when peeling onions and it was so bad, I was trying to avoid using them! Until one day, I put them in the fridge...
It never bothered me again! Funny, I didn't even remember that it used to bother me! It comes so natural now, it's like chopping any other veggie!

Make sure your knife is very sharp. When the blade is dull you tend to crush the onion more then cut it. I use an enclosed chopper I found in a secons hand store. So there are no more tears for me. It was one of those things you used to see advetised all the time years ago. You might also try wearing eye protection as well.

Rinse the peeled onion under cold water. That neutralizes the chemical that makes you teary eyed.

I slice the ends off the onion, quickly peel them and then rinse it in cold water before I chop it up. It does help :)

Place a wet white handkerchief over your hands while slicing or dicing your onions. This way the molecules from the onion juice will go into the hanky, not into the air and your eyes.

really hard not to get it to irratate your eye, but you can improve it by:
cutting in a well ventilated area... the more circulation of air, helps move the fumes around and away from your face.
sharp knife, this helps reduce the irritation in the onions flesh.
and always clean your hands afterwards, so that you don't rub your eye.
also take a lil break between cutting, like run out side, get the freash air. :)

the way I used to do it became into i might put in eye drops on the beginning up of my artwork day and chew gum at the same time as i became into cutting the onions. it fairly works fairly properly in case you apart from mght slice the onion in fourths and then rinse it in a stainer with chilly water. It rinses out most of the acidic juices and makes it lots much less stressful to cut the onion.

Run the onion under very cold water. I've also heard that lighting a candle nearby helps difuse the problem.
