Going on mission is expected but not required of Mormons, and going on mission if you are female is not expected.

The mission rules are essentially the same for men and women with the following exceptions (as explained to me by Sister Sands when I met her during Stake Conference a few weeks ago):

Both Men and Women can go on missions in their youth and in later life. When they go in later life they go as husband and wife together. I have seen this type of missionary couple several times, but they usually have other types of tasks supporting church functions than teaching the missionary discussions.

Elder Missionaries serve typically from 19-21 years of age.

Sister Missionaries cannot serve until they turn 21, but after they serve their two year mission, they can sign up for another two years as many times as they want to. The guys can't do that.

Sister Missionaries do exist, but they are less common. I would guess perhaps ten percent of the missionaires in my area are sisters (women).

I'm a Mormon, and a woman, and I went on a mission. I served in Bulgaria. I went door to door, talked to people, in Bulgarian, lived among the Bulgarians for a year and a half. It was the greatest experience.

There are less women that go on missions than men, so it's more likely that you will see "Elders" or male Mormon missionaries. But they do serve and are out there.

I don't know. It could depend on where you live. There are lots of women who choose to serve an LDS mission, but the numbers for men are much higher because men in our faith are called to serve, where as women have a choice, so to speak. To learn more, visit www.lds.org

I met a few when I stopped at a Mormon historical site in Nebraska.

I don't think they go door to door like the boys do.

There are more female Mormon missionaries than there are Baptist missionaries of either sex.

Sister missionaries serve for 18 months and are 21 years of age or older. There are perhaps 10,000 of them or more serving at any one time.

Have you ever met a Baptist missionary?

They represent about 20% of the missionaries. They are often given assignments at vistor centers, but they will be assigned to other areas where they may have an impact.

They have them. They are younger not married yet, young ladies that give up 2 years of their lives to do missionary work for their sect. They usually work with people within their own church better understand the faith and the whole Joseph Smith thing, and they teach children in preparation for baptism.

Assuming a missionary position is important work. I suspect they're doing it more than you realize.
