A guy I go to school with asked me to Homecoming this week, and I told him that I didn't know and would tell him later. I'm scared that if I go ahead and go with him to the dance, he'll think that we're "going out", and, plus, I want to keep my options open and see if anyone else is going to ask me. Any advice?

Let him know you and him are not an item just because you are going to the Homecoming Dance.

well.. tell him you may not be interested in going with him. its better to be honest than to lie. if a girl wasnt sure about going with me as a friend or as my date then id respect her feelings and ask someone else. but who's to say this boy is mature. but yeah just tell him.. "Hey im sorry but im going to have to revoke my previous commitment of going to homecoming with you, sorry" and then give him that cute smile girls just know how to do when they said something almost insulting

If you like him, GO.

If you don't like him, DON'T GO.

If you want to keep your options open, so that maybe you might be asked to go by someone who is cooler to be seen with, tell him NO, so that you can save him from going to the dance with someone as shallow as you.

And that will leave your option open to be asked out by someone equally as shallow as you appear to be.

Just politely, and smiling, tell him that you've had someone else in mind that you've been planning to go with for a while or something. He should understand. ;)

just tell him that if you decide to go to the dance with him that its just a date and nothing else. if he doesn't like your answer then that frees you up to accept a date with whom you really want to go with

just be honest and upfront...tell the guy as soon as possible....be civil, and straightforward...don't beat around the bush, and don't try to make him feel better like be the comforter in the situation.

Decline his offer nicely, but hope someone else will ask you.
