To pfiefer, If we need their minerals why aren't we helping them. I thought they didn't have anything to offer us that is why we weren't helping. I understand the faulty thinking re: the oil rich countries. I'm not dumb, but these poor womes are tortured and scarred for life!

To wrathofkubla, I agree we are being led by the media on what theywant us to know. But if the goverment doesn't have an agenda, why is the media telling us the story. Are you saying the media is good?

maybe this will help
last year I was one of many to travel to New Orleans and help the victims and survivors
what I saw there appalled me. Not everyone was a victim there, damage was not universal, some parts of town (usually the poor side) were decimated but the other parts, higher and stronger, well built remained with tree lines and things in place to protect thier homes already.
there were people on site who lived in N.Orleans who didn't help thier neighbors and I traveled 600 miles with kids with a trailerfull of donated goods to help, and I saw BBQ's going, people playing n pools, right in full view of the displaced and needy, and they only cared enough to turn backs and not help, wanted them to leave so they could get on with life.
moral of the story: be the change you wish to see in others around you
globally there is problems but largely it is their problem, there are people there and neighboring nations that are tolleration and enabling this abuse. It's sad but you also count, your neighbors count and we have tragedies all around, people in need right where you stand, usually invisible until your eyes are opened and you see the homeless, the abused, the neglected and impoverished all around you now
I care, but I also care about local issues. I'll do what I can both there and here, be a Good Samaritain where I am not in another part of town
that was to say I deemed others only in need not my neighbors
love your neighbor as yourself, that is what we can control, that is what we should be found, be a steward of what you have right where you are, there is plenty to do!

Here is my response.
1. We are being directed by our news media what to know about the world around us.
2. Countries don't get involved in other countries -- I know, I know there is plenty of evidence otherwise, but traditionally and historically it's true.
3. Our leaders have an agenda that does not include the Sudan and Congo.
4. Even knowing about these two areas, there are atrocities even here in our own backyard -- and certainly in pockets all over the world.
5. Pick your battles. If you choose to invest your life, time and money in a cause, please do so. It's a noble effort and I applaud it.

IT ISN'T WHAT YOU THINK!
As the NY Times pointed out today, it's resources: you need their minerals to make your cell phone, your PDA, your computer. Stuff you can't even pronounce is mined by little bitty kids in filthy swamps and dusty mounds and sold for enough to get them 25 cents a day and their gang bosses 10 times as much.
Just like the Iraqi war, it's ALL ABOUT RESOURCES. About money.

I find it very hard to care about anyone anymore, it doesn't matter who they are. Nobody cared about me when I was in a disaster and did nothing for me so I just can't seem to care.

i think we should have gone to Darfur to help people being masacred instead of going to Iraq to get people masacred.
