The best way to stick to a diet is to not diet at all. What you need to do is decide that you just want to live a healthy life and make the changes neccessary to follow through. Keep plenty of fruit you like around and eat that when you want something sweet. Switch to water, 100% pure fruit juice, or diet soda. Butterless popcorn, fruit and vegetable chips, nuts, seeds, yoghurt, and ice milk can actually be pretty tasty if you'll give yourself a chance to get used to them. If you just buy foods like those, and don't keep junk foods around, you'll start to get used to them and stop craving junk.

Well...this is going to be a long answer.

Bare with me!

Dieting is fine, but you really want to attempt to make a lifestyle change. In the end it's healthier for you without a doubt. You'll learn what's good to eat, how often to eat, how to cheat a little (and what to cheat with), etc. It will prolong your life and you'll get healthy.

Where to start you ask? Start here...this is just one of the estimated metablolic rate "calculators" on the internet it's very helpful. Check those out at the web address below. You'll get a pretty accurate idea on how many calories you need and everything.

http://www.prosource.net/calculators.jsp

After you do all those and take notes and establish how many grams per day of each nutrient you need...protein, carbs, and fat. Then you're basically set. From there it gets pretty simple.

Start reading labels and making a food diary. Stick to your daily calorie levels and try to spread those calories a little more throughout the day than just the three basic meals.

You've got to stay in the rhythm and realize that there are natural things that taste just as good as the manufactured ones and they'll be healthier for you. Wholegrains for example. I actually prefer the taste of a multigrain/wholegrain bread over a white bread.

Try to stay away from saturated fats..from animals and things like that. To do that BUY LEAN MEAT! It might take a little bit of effort to learn to make a meatloaf that isn't dry with lean ground beef, but do a little research and practice makes perfect.

Fibrous fruits and vegies are great for snacks! Apples are a nice one..oranges/grapefruits. Also, things like spinach as far as the vegies go. With fruit you want something that has that pulp in it like apples and oranges. Bananas are high in carbs (although definitely a better source than from white flower) not so good for a diet.

FIBER will help you stay full longer and help you to keep off some of that unwanted weight by regulating the insulin response. (giberish? don't worry about it...by stuff with color) Example wheat bread over white bread...spinach/wholegrain pastas over white. Not so complicated at all.

Practice in moderation. Moderation is key. If you want to eat your icecream save it for one day a week and try not to eat the whole container. I know it tastes good, but it's not good for you. You could also try trading out the regular icecream for stuff made with lower milk fat content (they'll probably have something on the label) or even frozen yogurt. MODERATION IS KEY for everything you do with diet, health, and fitness. Never do too much.

Lastly, hit the gym. You'll actually be less hungry if you start eating better and going to the gym will do everything you need to keep your whole body healthy. You gotta move that blood around on a regular basis. If you don't break a sweat for an hour a day, every day, then you're doing something wrong..and I don't just mean sitting outside on a chair in the sun! lol.

With all this information you're set. If there's any more questions refer to websites for bodybuilders. Ignore all the supplement stuff it doesn't apply to you right now. Just look up information on bodybuilders diets. Bodybuilding.com is a good site to go to. They have to eat extremely well to get their body fat percentage low enough.

Hope this helps!

Someone else already hit on it. Change your eating habits, but don't crash diet.

The simplest formula to remember is calories in versus calories out. You should endeavor to burn more calories than you consume.

Being more specific, make the best of the calories-in side of the equation. Eat foods rich in vitamines and nutrients (especially dietary fiber, protein, Vitamin A,B,and C, and Thiamin), and avoid foods that offer low nutrients but high saturated fats, sodium, and sugar).

As for Calories-out, this obviously means cardiovascular activity (minimum requirement 3 times per week, at least 30 minutes per instance), as well as weight training (the presence of lean muscle mass developed from weight training, will help lift metabolic levels and help the body to burn more calories).

Having said that, the one popular "diet" that is out there, that many of my clients have had success with, is the South Beach Diet. It is functional, because only in the first week are you asked to make large sacrifices in your eating choices. After that, it is an easy eating style to manage for the rest of your life and without sacrificing the enjoyment of eating tasty foods.

Try this free website where you can track your calories eaten and burned through exercise and also get support from chat boards with other members called http://www.sparkpeople.com

It's an excellent resource, full of good tips, tools and advice and even shows demonstrations of proper exercise and strength training techniques and it really got me motivated after years of demotivation. I don't what it was about this site, but I've been exercising nearly everyday since I started it.

I've lost 10 lbs so far, been on it for 2.5 weeks!

i lost 20lb since April and i ate what i like but limited to 500 cal per day less than what i used to do.
go to calorieking.com get Little scale for like $10.00 or so and you will be happy.
multiply your weight in lb by 15 that is your daily intake of calories per day -500 to loose 2-5lb per week. so if you are 150lb15=2250 -500 =1750cal per day and you will get there.
yes chocolate is OK.lots of protein lean meat nuts ,less starch bread potato's ...
