Thai culture is heavily influneced by Buddhism and just about every aspect of life in Thailand is affected by Buddhism from weddings to most public schools. Sanuk is a thai word which basically means fun and it is incoporated into work to make it less hard like making jokes.
Thais consider the feet to be the lowest part of the body and they head the highest. Thai's never point there feet to people and when they sit on the ground they tend to put their feet behind them. The head is never to be touched by someone else and it is extremly disrespultful to do that to a Thai person.
Thais wear long pants as a sign of respuct to other people dispeite how hot the temp is. Wearing shorts is considered childish and rude to most Thai's.
Try going on ebay for the thai lakhon dress.
Hope your daughters project goes well.

You can actually sew your own costume. There are many costumes from various parts of Thailand. If you do a little bit of research on Thai Dance costumes, you'll find one that isn't hard to put together. For example, if you find cotton fabric with prints that resembles anything close to Thai Sarong (Pasin), you can make a simple short/long skirt with elastic waist band. Or you can also visit www.ramthai.com to actually buy the costume (costly). There are also plenty of simple Thai dishes on the internet.
