If I have a visa and everything, can I gain entry into the US with a passport that only has 5 months left of validity? It expires in the January of 2007.

Yes, you can still use your passport for travel to the US until it expires. Although by regulation a passport can't be used for the last six months until it expires, Malaysia is one of the many countries with which the US has a reciprocal agreement to extend the validity of passports for an additional six months, thus allowing them to be used for travel until the day they expire.

Even so, you should not use the passport to go to the US if your trip will go past the expiration date, unless you are absolutely certain you will be able to renew or extend it in the US.
