Petecchiae are pin-point sized red dots that are the sign of broken blood vessels seen in someone with platelet dysfunction. Von Willibrand's may also have this. As far as the size of the blood stain - it depends on the surface - doesn't it? Is the surface absorbent or smooth? What is the size of the source of the blood? Large cut? There are currently too many variables for a precise answer. A very good test for Von Willibrand's is the bleeding time test. This measures in TIME (minutes) how long a precise cut made in controlled situation (blood pressure cuff inflated to provide consistent mild pressure to the area). The size drop obtained during this test on special filter paper has nothing to do with the results itself - tho the size does diminish and the test nears conclusion.
