An alcoholic is someone that has a constant craving for alcoholic beverages and finds it compulsive to drink them, and even to buy them. It is overwhelming for them to try to go without alcohol. Alcoholism is often associated with chronic depression. It can and very often does accentuate that depression and makes it even more difficult to treat. Alcoholics that begin a treatment for alcoholism and depression will many times choose the alcohol over the medication, or worse, take both. Alcoholics, when not inebriated, are usually in a state of "stand by" inebriation (I don't know the proper term, so I made that one up), and it takes only a small amount of an alcoholic beverage to get them inebriated and to make the symptoms of inebriation detectable. They will rarely act as a drunkard does, instead being more introverted and somewhat contained. An alcoholic will always persistently lie and deny that he or she has consumed any alcohol even when the symptons make it obvious that he/she did and they may often pretend that they're under the effect of some medication or simply sleepy as an excuse for their lack of balance and for tripping on words. Alcoholics usually have a very negative impact in the ambient of their households, affecting those close to them emotionally and psychologically. Impossible, because it is different for everyone. The place at which you would be classified as an alcoholic may be different than someone else. Being an alcoholic is much more than just drinking a lot of booze.
By the way, I really dislike the saying that "anyone who is in denial' is an alcoholic. That just means that everyone who drinks alcohol that says they don't have a problem with it is an alcoholic.

They define moderate drinking, (may even be healthful) this way. Yet if you measure out 1.5 ounces, into a cocktail glass, it is far, far, less than a typical drink. Something is not right in those studies.
But in the studies, the medical team doesn't measure the drinks. They ask the people how many drinks they usually have. And the point is, the drinks are usually more than 1.5 ounces. But the researchers use the 1.5. So the medical studies are not correct at all

Irina, the scientific study begs the question, how does cultural perceptions affect science?
Some would respond, "You have to draw the line somewhere."
I accept the view of the A.A. that if a person accepts that consuming alcohol is creating problems, then the user is alcoholic.
I have at times in my life considered myself alcoholic. I am presently practicing moderation. I'll be glad to respond to any of your questions in this.
