Talk to your pediatrician. When it comes to feeding your baby solids, you have to be careful especially when introducing new foods. Cereal should be fine especially now because they recommend not feeding solids until 4-6 months. When you start feeding fruits and other solids you should only introduce one new food every 3-5 days to make sure they don't have an allergic reaction. And be sure to know what foods are not recommended before the age of 1 such as whole milk, nuts, citrus, honey etc.... the best thing to do is to talk to your pediatrician about introduction of new foods. Hope this helps... btw I have a child with food allergies not fun...

It is the general recommendation of most pediatricians to wait until babies are 6 months old before adding solids to their diet. Formula and/or breastmilk provide all the nutrients a baby needs for the first 6 months. Early introduction of solids can lead to an increased risk of food allergies. Baby food and infant cereal do not contain all the vitamins and minerals a baby needs. If you increase the amount of solids a baby is fed then he/she will naturally decrease the amount of formula/breastmilk he takes. Depending on your baby's weight, she should still be taking about 5 bottles every day with between 5-8 ounces of formula or breastfeeding about 5 times a day. Solids should be supplementing and not replacing a feeding. Give the bottle or breast first and finish off with some infant rice cereal if she still seems hungry. When she is 6 months old, you can increase the times a day she gets cereal. For now, once or twice a day is plenty for her. After 6 months old, begin introducing veggies one at a time and wait about 3 days before adding another to allow for adjustment to a new food and to watch for signs of reactions (diarrhea, upset tummy, runny nose, rash). Follow veggies with fruits and add meats last. When she can sit up in the high chair, she will enjoy eating food on her own - Cheerios, sliced bananas cut into 1/4's, pasta cut into small pieces, small pieces of cooked sweet potato or cooked carrots are all good early finger foods. If they are soft, she can gum them and doesn't need a lot of teeth to eat "real" food. It won't hurt her at all to have begun the solids at 4 months, especially if your doctor recommended it, but don't be in a big rush to get her to eat too much solids before her system is ready to digest it.

I would not feed cereal at every meal because sometimes this may cause constipation. I work at a child care center and I will feed the infant in my class a fruit and cereal for breakfast and not a lunch.

At 5 months she should barely be starting on solids, or not at all. It is actually recommended to wait until 6 months. The most important thing to remember is that breastmilk or formula is supposed to be the main food source for the first year. Always feed your baby milk first and then top them up with solids if they want it. At this age they get all their nutrition from milk, and giving them solids isn't so much for nutritional value but to get them used to the textures etc. My baby is 7 1/2 months, and I feed her about 2 tsps once a day of rice cereal. Here's a website to give you some helpful info.

Experts are actually saying it's even better to wait until 7 or 8 months before starting solids. Here's some info about that.

There are also signs listed in the first website to look for if your baby is ready for solid foods. If you feel that she doesn't have these sighs, it's ok to stop feeding solids for a few weeks and just give milk. I initially started my daughter at 6 months but she wasnt ready at all. I stopped for a few weeks. She's still having a hard time with them, so I'm not going to force the issue. She will eat more as she's ready.

do not hardship about what a number of those scary human beings say. My toddler all started getting rice cereal in her bottle at 8 weeks because she change into merely so hungry. She change into born at 9lbs 2oz, and merely has a huge urge for food. The doctor informed me to attempt this. even as i began her on toddler food (this week), i did not supply her the rice anymore because in view that she's on food now, she doesn't desire the more beneficial empty energy. i'd nonetheless verify with the record besides, yet i presumed i'd share my opinion in view that i have been operating heavily w/ the toddler's doctor. strong success!

Frogs is correct. After a month on baby foods and cereal I started blending pretty much what the rest of the family was eating. One of my son's favorites was my homemade beef stew. I have one of the nice Braun Stick blenders with all the attachments and it is great for blending up food for baby. My son is now 2 and he eats just about anything.

children are all different and as a new mother you should consult your babies doctor because each child has different feeding problems in other words what is good for one may not be so good for another. If your child is healthy then feed as you were told to do by the doctors. Most folks try to rush their children on to basic foods too early and this causes bowel problems so go slow and don't rush into any changes until it is time to do so.

You give it whenever you feel your baby needs it. If she's doing well with the cereal, and stays hungry alot, then I would go ahead and start some 1st foods veggies, and fruits. You can always hold off if they seem to hurt her tummy or something, but do give them a try. She may love it! Also, don't switch all in one day to the 1st foods. Do it gradual...ex......cereal, then a veggie, then cereal, veggie, etc. Good luck.
Mine is 4mos. and ready for solids, but the little porker cant hold his fat head up, so I'll have to wait for that to come before I spoon feed.
PS. Dont listen to some of these bonehead answers telling you what you should and shouldn't do for YOUR baby. If your baby is ready for more food, give it to her. That's your baby and your business! Giving solids before 6mos of age is NOT considered child abuse! ha ha (though some act like it is) Do what you feel is right for your baby, as long as she's not fussing, puking, etc. then its not hurting her one bit!
