What are some ideas/ topics to talk about with him? that will actually get him to say more than one word...he really doesnt like to open up really, tried asking him about him, sports etc.....what else is there?

stop asking questions with one word answers.
take your same questions and word them to be a choice.
do you like ketchup on you hamburger?
what do you like on your hamburger?

For a change, you might want to let him do the talking. Ask questions. Show him that you're interested in him. Stop talking about yourself even if that may be hard to do. After all, your question is about getting him to talk about himself.

you could always try to find out his interests... ask him what he's in to, he's got to say more than one word then. maybe he's just shy, give him a little time but just keep trying to figure out what he's into then go from there. good luck.

most people like to talk about themselves - ask him questions about his work, his family, his favorite car, his favorite movie etc., some childhood experiences
open ended questions work great.
