Did your cat or dog get sprayed during your weekend away at the cabin? Keep your pet outdoors until you get rid of the obnoxious skunk odor with the following solution.

Steps:
1. Mix 4 c. hydrogen peroxide with 4 tbsp. baking soda and 1 tsp. dish-washing soap.

2. Put cotton balls in your pet's ears to protect the inner-ear tissue from the cleaning mixture, which could easily drip in.

3. Don rubber gloves to protect your hands during this process.

4. Start with your pet's head, taking care not to get the solution into his eyes, ears or mouth. Apply a drop of olive or baby oil to his eyes to prevent irritation.

5. Rub the mixture evenly into your pet's coat. It will probably be more pleasant to do this outdoors.

6. Rinse the coat with clean water.

7. Repeat if the smell persists.

Tips:
Tomato juice also neutralizes the effects of skunk odor. Rub it into your pet's fur, let it soak for approximately 15 minutes, then wash it off with water.

Commercially prepared skunk odor remover or douches that remove skunk scents from fur are also available. Ask your veterinarian for advice on which product works best.

To help prevent your pet from being sprayed, use a leash when in the woods or country.

Warnings:
Skunks can carry rabies, so make sure your pet's vaccinations are current before you visit areas frequented by skunks.

My dog got skunked and we used 2 cans of tomato juice and some vinegar and it worked perfectly. He smelled just like the stuff we used on him, so we used a citrus shampoo to cover those odors and it was like he never got skunked.

Skunked again by eHow Friend
Vinegar, baking soda, and liquid dish soap has been the best. First I tried peroxide with the others. My black dog turned reddish-colored, but it was a small price to pay. Sponge on the vinegar foam on the face and wait for it to neutralize the stink. I keep smelling the dog as I do this until I'm satisfied, then I use a dog shampoo. Good to go! Will she ever learn?

My dog got "skunked" twice. Bathed him in a tub of tomato juice. This worked for us. Good luck.

best way that we found to remove the skunk smell was to wash the dog with tomato juice, lots and lots of undiluted tomato juice and then of course was him again as you normally would.

douches...really. The vinegar in Massengil and other brands takes out the smell. Apply to the dog like shampoo (not like a douche, for the dog's sake..and your sake)...
