It is not a good idea for humans to do this. The mother cat knows how to pick the kitten up by the skin and we do not. We can get a hold of muscle or ligaments and actually hurt the kitten.

Picking up a kitten by the scruff of the neck is not an appropriate way to pick up a kitten. The mother cat carries very young kittens that way when she is moving them from one nest location to another, but those kittens are much lighter than your kitten at home. The best way to pick up a kitten is to support them under their front legs and under their back end. That way they will feel secure and safe and are less likely to struggle.

Picking up a cat by the scruff of the neck does NOT hurt them. That someone was right, mother cats do pick kittens up that way. It releases something (I forget what its called) into their system that calms them down and kind of paralyses them until released. That's why I hold the scruff of my cats neck when I give her a flea bath, less struggle...

I doesn't hurt kittens, but you shouldn't try that with an older cat if it's not used to it because the skin won't be so loose and you may bruise it and cause it some pain (not to mention causing you some pain if the cat objects with great indignation). However, if the cat is accustomed to being picked up this way then it shouldn't be a problem.

It is not advisable to pick up an adult cat by the scruff of the neck. The weight of the adults body concentrated on its neck could injure the animal.

I am not being horrible, but think how you would feel if someone picked you up by the scruff of your neck ...

Not for kittens; their skin is looser and they're much lighter. Adult cats don't like it, though. We have a kitten who doesn't like being picked up by the scruff. I don't think it hurts her; she just doesn't like being picked up that way.

No, it doesn't hurt. If you have to pick up a cat, that's how you should do it. But don't make a habit of it. Cats are domesticated, which means they were once wild animals. So they don't like to be picked up. There are times when they need a little attention, want to be stroked. They'll let you know.. AnnieM

No, it doesn't hurt them. Most mother animals (mammals) carry their young around this way.

It is a great way to "subdue" any cat at any age. The limp response stays with them forever. When a cat is older and heavier you must also support the weight of the cat with your other hand as well when you pick them up.

picking them up by their loose skin doesn't actually hurt them for some time but holding them like that for a long time makes them uncomfortable and they start kicking so that you let go. but thats the way the mommy cat holds them and it has to keep putting them on the ground at regular intervals when they start kicking

Yes, it hurts them. Ask a vet if you don't believe me.

Kittens are very light, and they have an extra layer of fat so mama can pick them up when she needs to move them.

An adult cat is HEAVIER and will be hurt and possibly injured by this.

People are so negligent toward animals. Please don't hurt your cat.
