My gf and I are remodeling our house. The contractor has a sometimes-helper who may be available to work on the project. This helper sports a visible swastika tattoo - possibly others. I don't feel comfortable allowing someone who is proud of their hatred add their vibe to my home. My gf says "Maybe he doesn't know what it means," and "Maybe it is a reflection of Buddhist beliefs." I'm thinking he isn't simultaneously uneducated AND sporting a swastika 'cause he's into Eastern religion. Further, there isn't a chance in my mind he's unaware of what this symbol means to most people in the west - hatred, genocide, and evil. What are your thoughts? Is my gf delusional, or am I the intolerant prick?

I had a tough time categorizing this one. The core issue is a family-disagreement on how to proceed.

I would say that your gf is naive rather than delusional. I would also say that the man sporting the swastika is the intolerant prick. (Geesh, don't be so hard on yourselves).

I would let the contractor know that you do not want this worker in your house because of his offensive tattoo. He chose that tattoo; it is his right. But, sometimes people have to pay the consequences for their very poor ignorant choices.

While it could be the obvious answer of a fascination with Nazi culture, I doubt it. I don't know about Korea, but in Japan, they have what appears to be a swastika on most shrines. It's actually a symbol that used to mean something good, but they generally stopped using it during/after WWII. Since Korean and Japanese have a whole different alphabet and Korean doesn't inclue that symbol, I'm not sure how relevant that is. Also, the swastika used to be the symbol for an organization to a group similar to the American Red Cross. But really, I'd just ask your roommate if it really bothers you that much.

Ok, I see your point, even IF he is into eastern religions, just about everyone knows who at least attended school is familiar with Nazism, and the swastika. So even IF they wanted to use it as a religious symbol,l, surely they know how offensively it could be perceived. I guess I kind of liken it to the Confederate flag (I promise I won't go too deep into this) but this offends a lot of people because of some of the things it stands for, even though some say it is meerly an expression of their southern pride. So yes, I agree either this person has some hateful attitudes, or doesn't give a crap what people think, neither conclusion is good news.

The swastika was a symbol of the drawing and quartering of the universe into active and passive principles for hundreds of years before the Nazis coopted it.

The Boiy Scouts used to give out a white swastika medal in the early parts of the 20th Century.

But he has to know what a detested symbol it is and it may never return to what it once was.

I think you should talk to your contractor. Tell him that the helper appears to have a swastika tattoo, and you see this as being a Nazi symbol and are uncomfortable with having the helper in your home.

Perhaps you're wrong, but in the end it's your home and you deserve to feel comfortable in it.

Im sure he knows what it is... now what I want to know is Is he doing a good job? Does he know what he is doing and will the job get done right for a decent price.. those are my main concerns when getting work done... not a persons beliefs... Did you ever think that maybe in his youth he was a nazi and got some tattoos and then later on he changed his mind but doesn't have the funds for removal because people like you judge him and he can't work?

Well swastika is drawn in 2 different way. One side means life and upside down means death. He knows why and what it is. He is a Hitler fan maybe.. check out on line and see what side is his. Or just ask him. Yeah they leave bad luck behind.. I would n't want some one to work on my house.. who is full of hate. Be a man and draw the line.

Some idiots just think it's kool to have or to use it to fit into their friends expectations of what is cool and no they dont know the true meaning of it so I would call that uneducated. This guy is probably in his mid 20's and probably regrets having it. Now that maybe he realizes what it is and maybe opened a book.

i'm sure he knows what it stands for, but maybe he got it awhile back and doesn't really feel that way any more. Me personally? I would come right out and ask him. Why do you wear the swastika?? See what he says

He possibly knows what it means....educated or not educated.... but he may not know the deeper occult meaning of the swastika. Best thing you ask him why he has that tattoo and you may get your answer. (Swastika comes from Sanskrit)...and it is a welknown fact that Hitler was into the occult....
