I asked a similar question as I had a cardiac arrest experience and was revived. ( of course) chuckle
I lost my ability to speak and remember anything at age 4 so I don't remember the death experience...I have asked for others to tell their experience... in my question I had one gentleman answer with his experience of cardiac arrest and so I gave him best answer.
I believed his story.

No one really knows.
Some people suggest that near death experience is caused by anoxia - lack of oxygen to the brain - & that this is what happens as the neurons start to "misfire" before shutting down.
Some people suggest that the mind is not created by the brain but separate from it, & that near-death experience is a temporary disingaging of the connection between the two.
There are both remarkable similarities & remarkable differences in near death experiences in people from different cultures; India & the U.S., for instance. If it were merely a biological phenomena, this would be unlikely.
On the other hand, now that near death experience accounts have been publicized & millions of people have read about what other people already described, the inclination to recreate similar experiences cannot be ruled out as an explanation for later stories.
Someday this phenomena might be better understood. For all the publicity, very little research has actually been done in this area.
The first researcher, Raymond Moody, is cited below.

Some people say its a hallucination, some say that your mind can regress back to your memory of being born which is like near death-the white tunnel--its leaving the womb headfirst--bright light appears.

It happened to my husband a few months ago when he had a major heart attack. No, not hallucination, not made-up stories - it's the real thing!
