I used to be Catholic too until I became a Christian. I just found so many things that Catholicism teaches that aren't biblical. So now, I didn't choose a religion, but a relationship with my God.

I cannot tell which religion is "best." Choose Christianity and you will probably suffer and get persecuted for it (Christianity is not a religion or religious system, by the way). But it's real. It's truth.

You can follow other religions that claim to give you peace. But they would all lead to deadends. I once searched for answers like you are now. So I understand where you're coming from.

I left the Catholic Church some fifteen years ago because of the hierarchy, didacticism and overwhelming sense of guilt and shame.

My advice is to explore -- there are a lot of religions out there and which is best for you depends on what you most need. That will change too, so it could be a few years before you settle.

If you're wanting to remain a Christian, try some of the other churches in your area until you find one that you're comfortable with (I know it's a weird concept for Catholics, but Protestants 'church shop' a lot.)

If you're not that attached to Christianity or just want to explore other ways of being spiritual, there are still lots of options. The Unitarian-Universalists are a haven for the disaffected of many religions, generally good at community and food, not always so hot on ritual. Buddhism is fascinating -- look for a regular meditation group. Or the Quakers, who have a different way of going about it.

I converted to Judaism. I needed a tradition that was strong enough to stand up to my Catholic upbringing and undo a lot of the damage that was done; Judaism is perfect for that in so many ways and is beautiful and profound in its own right. I also study Buddhism and my thinking is very much influenced by that, although I've unfortunately fallen out of meditation practice....

My ID is contactable; if anything that I've said makes sense to you, please do write to me. All the best in your search. It's an amazing journey.

This is a question in which u have 2 find the answer urself. Ask ur heart who made this earth complete with all walks of life. How do we become human beings from just cells that multiplies, and u'll realise that there's one God and it's impossible for things to be exist on their own. All religions are good but it's the people who potray it as bad. I'm a Muslim and loving it!

Well, that all depends on what your "God" is. There are many religions and personally, I would suggest looking into different religions (Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, Jainism, etc.). I feel that religion is a belief system on a personal level and therefore, you should take what you want from different religions according to what you find you believe in. I don't think one book is completely right or wrong. The names of religions are just ways of sticking people into categories despite the fact that they may believe completely different things.

You can convert to a new Christian religion every week for the rest of your life, and still not get to them all. Just find a church that you feel good about, then stick with them.

Since you were Catholic and don't want to be anymore, you might try Methodists...they are like Catholic light.

It's important to examine the beliefs of any religion you choose to associate with. Do the beliefs ring true? I've attached some links to articles below that explore a few questions every person should ask him/herself before joining any religious organization, as well as some articles on why we can believe in God, and what Jehovah's Witnesses believe. It's encouraging to see that you are aware of your spiritual need - that is the first thing Jesus mentioned would bring happiness in his Sermon on the Mount. (Matt. 5:3)

PS - You might try looking at the other answers responders to this question have given (to other questions) to get a feel for the sorts of values they have.

I think you should consider what is it about being a catholic that makes you want to convert your religion.

Though, a basic solution if you do not want to be a catholic anymore. but you still belive in God then you should become a Christian.

There is still a weekly sunday service, but ALOT of the things that you do in mass is gone. Messages are given in english and the pastors, deacons and elders, should be very willing to answer any questions you have about the Bible. When you pray, you pray directly to God instead or to mary / through mary as well.

The main difference is that Christians belive that Jesus died on the cross, but ressurected three days later, instead of staying dead. There is also no belief in purgatory, you go straight to Heaven when you die on earth.
You will also live your life by faith in God and praising him for the good things in your life, while asking for his help during hard times. Doing good works is not a MUST to confirm your place in Heaven. The moment you believe in Jesus and that he arose from the cross, and ask him to live in your heart as a Christian, you have a confirmed place in Heaven. Doing good deeds and spreading the word shows your love for Him and it sets a good example for others around you.
Baptism is also not a compulsary thing that you have to do to get into heaven. Remember the thief who died on the cross next to Jesus? He did no good in his life, and he was not baptised, but Jesus told him that he will be joining him in Heaven that very day!

Christianity is the best solution for you, if you decide to convert from being a catholic.

If you have any more basic questions or issues about Christianity, you can email me if you want to.

Hope this information helps :)

What a question! I think you are brave to say this, and eve nmore brave for not abandoning faith!

I am Unitarian Universalist. In my church, we:

- Have no creed.

- Instead, we believe that there is no "one truth". We encourage people to discover for themselves what they believe, on a personal search for truth.

We have seven principles which we follow, including a belief in the "inherant worth and dignity of every person," and belief in democratic society.

Im a teen, and i love my church more than anything. it is a home away from home, and i feel more comfortable and accepted ther than anywhere else. Even if you don't know what you believe anymore, UUs will welcome you and support you on the difficult journey of re-finding belief. My mother was like you... a catholic who no longer believed.

I wish you all the best in your search!
You can learn more about it at http://www.uua.org/aboutuu/uufaq.html

Strength and good luck!

It's impossible to say which religion would be best for you without knowing your current belief system other than a belief in God. I consider myself Agnostic, but find that the Unitarian Church is very inspirational. Pretty much it's non denominational and amounts to a theology lecture, but if you have an open mind and don't begrudge anyone else the right to believe what they like...it's a very good church.

This is really a personal matter. No one can decide what the correct religion is for you. What you should really do is:
1) Listen to others and find out different things about different religion.
2) Research! Read the bible, quran, text of buddha, hindu text..etc etc...That's the best way to find out what religion is best for you.
Good luck & wish you all the best!

PS: Please don't fall for wikipedia. It's really bias. Just a crappy site where everyone post their own stuff and get random peopele to edit them. So, most of the things aren't true.
