"They are pure bred and registered with AKC and they look like chihuahuas"
That alone would have me guess that, yes, they are chihuahuas.

The AKC (American Kennel Club) recognizes two varieties of Chihuahua: the long-coat and the smooth-coat. Many smooth-coat Chihuahuas have very thin hair, but other smooth coats have a very dense, thick coat.
Breed standards for this dog do not generally specify a height, only a weight and a description of their overall proportions. As a result, height varies more than within many other breeds. Generally, the height ranges between six and ten inches at the withers. However, some dogs grow as tall as twelve to fifteen inches. AKC show dogs must weigh no more than six lb (2.7 kg); the FCI standard calls for dogs ideally between 1.5 and three kg (3.3 to 6.6 lb), although smaller ones are acceptable in the show ring. However, pet-quality Chihuahuas (that is, those bred or purchased as companions rather than show dogs) can, and do, range above these weights, to ten pounds or even more if they have large bone structures or are allowed to become overweight. This does not mean they are not purebred Chihuahuas, it only means that they do not meet the requirements to enter a conformation show. Oversize Chihuahuas are seen in some of the best, and worst, bloodlines.
I bet they are adorable, my sister's friend has three of them and they are soooooooo cute!
hope that was of some help to you

Just because a pure bred dog is registered with the AKC does not mean it meets breed standards for size. Many AKC registered dogs would not even qualify for a show because they do not meet the breed standard. But yes your chihuahuas are pure bred.

Also keep in mind that AKC isn't a sure thing. People can register dogs that are not purebred, just by lying and the AKC doesn't follow up. It is much more likely that the dogs are just poorly bred and don't match the breed standard because the breeder doesn't care about the breed.

We just got a chihuahua from a shelter and she is a mixed breed with dachshund. She is a good puppy but.......they told me she was potty trained which she is kind of. She doesn't know how to hold her pee unless she in in the cage which stinks really. They are great watch dogs too. They don't just run up to anyone they are timid and shy till they get to know someone. You want a puppy that is happy and go lucky. Make sure they don't have snot coming out of their noses or eyes, make sure there is a guarantee on her. I have been told female dogs prefer men and male dogs prefer females.

It is possible... Chihuahuas are almot full-grown at that age. Sometimes you will come across larger chihuahuas as a result of many generations of poor breeding (as is the people didn't know what they were doing). It doesn't make them any less lovable.

The only way you can tell for sure is with DNA testing of the dogs and even then you cannot differentiaite the breeds yet.
I know alot of AKC breeders that admit to falsifying records.

you can get the pocket size chihuahuas and then the larger ones can vary...would say that yours are just on the larger scale.
